The Rams made two moves Tuesday morning, releasing linebacker Keshaaun Malone and defensive tackle Doug Worthington to get to the 75-man roster limit.
The final cut to 53 must be made by 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Tuesday’s moves mean that cornerback Brandon McGee has survived — at least this round of cuts. McGee, a fifth-round draft pick in 2013, has missed all but one day of training camp with a lingering foot injury.
“It’s been hard, particularly because he’s been dealing with things over the last year and a half,” Rams coach Jeff Fisher said Tuesday when asked about McGee, who spent much of last season on injured reserve. “By all accounts, he’s very, very close. All the medical reports, the MRIs, all those would imply or suggest he’s very close to being ready to go.”
McGee, 24, played in 15 games as a rookie, mainly on special teams and was credited with 10 tackles. In two games last year, he had four tackles before being placed on injured reserve with a foot injury.
Malone, an undrafted rookie from Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla., was in for 37 plays on defense and had four tackles during the preseason. He was his conference’s defensive player of the year last season at Bacone, where he registered 135 tackles, 10½ for loss, and five interceptions.
Worthington, 28, spent the last two weeks of the 2014 season on the Rams’ practice squad. The Ohio State product missed almost all of training camp with an undisclosed injury. He played in six games with the Washington Redskins in 2012 and has also spent time with Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and San Diego.
RAM-BLINGS
The Rams held their final full practice of the preseason on Tuesday, braving the midday heat at Rams Park in Earth City.“We needed to work through that (heat), so it was good work for them,” Fisher said. “They focused and they pushed through it. It’s not easy out here midday like this, but as we told them, it’s quite likely going to be very similar to the kickoff in Washington.”The Rams face the Redskins in D.C. in Week 2.
On Wednesday evening, the Rams will hold a walk-through at Scott Air Force Base. The trip has become an annual event as the team shows its appreciation for the country’s servicemen and women. As part of the unique experience, 22 military personnel will be selected to take the field and participate in the practice, which is expected to last about an hour.
It’s the second military trip of the preseason for the Rams, who visited Point Magu while in California.
“We got a chance to go by Point Magu on our way out of Oxnard,” Fisher said. “Had a great visit with them, and players got to sign autographs and got to interact with the soldiers. This is our third or fourth consecutive year that we’re going over to Scott Air Force Base and we’re going to have a walk-through, so the soldiers will participate. If it’s an offensive period, then we’ll have soldiers on defense and vice versa and they always look forward to that.”
• Fisher said that Case Keenum had locked up the No. 2 QB spot and that the competition for No. 3 is between Austin Davis and rookie Sean Mannion, a third-round draft choice.
• The offensive line shuffle continued on Tuesday with Barrett Jones at center and Demetrius Rhaney and Garrett Reynolds at the guard spots.
“It’s really ... it’s good. It’s competition and it’s good,” Fisher said of the battle for the starting spot at center. “We’re getting production out of not only Barrett and Tim (Barnes) but also out of Demetrius. ... It’s a good race right now.”
• Not practicing on Tuesday: RB Tre Mason (hamstring), CB Brandon McGee (foot), LBs Daren Bates (knee) and Jo-Lonn Dunbar (shoulder soreness), Gs Jamon Brown (ankle) and Andrew Donnal (finger), and DTs Michael Brockers (shoulder) and Nick Fairley (collarbone). DE Chris Long got a vets’ day off.
McGee, Brockers, Fairley and Donnal did work on the side with team trainers.
Rookie tackle Isaiah Battle left practice Tuesday with a foot injury.
“He’s okay. He got kicked in the Achilles,” Fisher said. “I’m going to go in and personally tape an Advil on his Achilles to make sure he’s back at practice tomorrow.”
• Rodger Saffold, back at practice Tuesday for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury Aug. 14 in the Rams’ 18-3 loss at Oakland to open the preseason, made sure to set the record straight right away when he met the media wearing a Cincinnati Reds cap that matched his red and black shirt.
“This hat is just fashionably here; there’s nothing against St. Louis,” he kidded. “This is just a colored hat I grabbed in the morning, kinda sleepy. The St. Louis hat was in the back, so I just grabbed it and rolled.”
• Some other Tuesday NFL cuts of local interest: DE Kenneth Boatright (SIUC) by Dallas; LB Jonathan Brown (Illinois) by Dallas; WR Jimmie Hunt (Cahokia/Mizzou) by Green Bay; and DB Travis Manning (Belleville West/Northwest Missouri) by New Orleans.
Also cut on Tuesday was former Rams DB Matt Daniels by Jacksonville.
Cut by Arizona on Monday, former Missouri State TE Gannon Sinclair was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Bears.
