Rams no strangers to making trick plays work

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- Rightfully, there has been plenty of discussion about the botched fourth down the Indianapolis Colts had against the New England Patriots on Sunday night.
It was a "trick" play of sorts that failed miserably and even had it worked, it would have been called back because the Colts failed to line up properly. Meanwhile, the St. Louis Rams are no strangers to taking some chances on fourth down under coach Jeff Fisher. But they've had a lot more success in those situations and have never left observers scratching their heads like all of America did Sunday night.
On Tuesday afternoon, ESPN analyst Matt Bowen examined five trick plays that actually worked, including an appearance from the 2014 Rams.
Bowen, as always, offered some great X's and O's insight into the fake punt the Rams threw against the Seattle Seahawks in their home win from last year. That was, of course, the play in which punter Johnny Hekker hit running back Benny Cunningham for a fourth-down conversion from their own 18-yard line. It was a risky call but one that worked and sealed the Rams' victory.
What's funny about it is that Bowen actually had other options for trick plays from that game. That was the same day the Rams ran the "Mountaineer" trick punt return that led to Stedman Bailey's touchdown.
Say what you will about Fisher's record, but there's no denying his resume of fourth-down trick plays that have worked to his team's advantage more often than not.
