Rams make 6 roster moves: Troy Hill to IR, Oday Aboushi to active roster

Cameron DaSilva /September 20, 2022

The Los Angeles Rams made a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday, mostly in response to two injuries suffered in Week 2. Both Tremayne Anchrum Jr. and Troy Hill suffered injuries against the Falcons, with Anchrum fracturing his ankle and Hill straining his groin.

Both players have been placed on injured reserve; Anchrum will miss the rest of the season, Sean McVay said, and Hill is now forced to sit out at least four games.

Place CB Troy Hill and OL Tremayne Anchrum Jr. on injured reserve

We already knew that Anchrum would miss the rest of the season after breaking his ankle. McVay was disappointed by that news, especially considering Anchrum was only able to play two snaps in his first NFL start.
What we didn’t know was how severe Hill’s injury is. His status was in doubt for Week 3 against the Cardinals, but he’ll now be out at least four games after being placed on injured reserve.
Derion Kendrick and Robert Rochell will need to step up in his place, especially if Cobie Durant can’t play after injuring his hamstring, too.

Sign OL Oday Aboushi to 53-man roster

Aboushi was added to the Rams’ practice squad last week and it didn’t take him long to land on the 53-man roster. With Brian Allen still injured and Anchrum now out, the Rams needed offensive line depth and Aboushi provides that.
He’ll be a candidate to start in place of Anchrum until Allen can return and shift Coleman Shelton back to right guard.

Sign DE Zach VanValkenburg to practice squad

VanValkenburg is not a familiar name for the Rams, but he adds some depth to the defensive line. He came into the NFL as an undrafted rookie this year, signing with the Raiders back in April. He played his college football at Iowa, recording 15 tackles for a loss last season to go along with 5.5 sacks.

Waive LS Matt Overton from practice squad

Overton was merely a backup plan in the event that Matthew Orzech couldn’t play in Week 2 after getting hurt in the opener. Orzech wound up playing against the Falcons on Sunday and appears to be fully healthy, so the Rams don’t need a second long snapper on the team, even if it’s just the practice squad.

Waive DB Dan Isom with injury settlement

Isom was cut by the Rams in the final round of roster trimming, but he landed back on the practice squad and spent the first two weeks there. Los Angeles has now waived him with an injury designation, which means he can revert to injured reserve if he clears waivers.

Well, I called it on Aboushi likely being the first man up from the practice squad to the 53 for the OL.
I'd love to see two more roster moves, bringing up FB/TE Roger Carter & RB Ronnie Rivers while waiving Evans & Gervase.
According to our team roster chart Jacob Harris has also returned to the practice squad after receiving 1 whole offensive snap against Atlanta.

Yes, I have the desire to see FB/TE/H-back Roger Carter work his way up to the MR53 too.

I was thinking here on the acquiring & now elevation of the 31 plus yr old veteran OL'er who has started @ four OL positions in the NFL... yes Oday Aboushi is 100% pure journeyman material but he just might be the perfect fit for this hurting OL with his 76 active NFL games with 46 starts.

So when starting center Brian Allen returns to health & Coleman Shelton returns to RG & Alaric Jackson returns to #6 Swing Reserve OT plus OG Oday Aboushi moves into the Swing OG position & Jeremiah Kolone remains reserve OC .......My question to you & anyone else who has an opinion......Does Bobby Evans have the same value to the Rams on 9/20/2022 as Evans did back 3 weeks ago with the addition of this new veteran OG?

I'm at a loss as to why Bobby Evans would have any value to the Rams at this point. I'd rather move Brewer or Arcuri up to the 53 than maintain Evans for the remainder of the season.

If I was allowed to draw up a depth Chart for our OL once Allen returns, it would likely look like this :

LT) Noteboom, Jackson
LG) Shelton, Aboushi
C) Allen, Shelton
RG) Jackson, Aboushi
RT) Havenstein, Edwards

Kolone back to our practice squad and I'd rip 49'ers practice squad Center Keith Ismael off of their practice squad and give Kolone some competition.

jmo.

I would bet if another team went after Accuri then they would promote him and possibly dump Evans.

So is Aboushi at least an above average run blocker or is he below average run blocker and above average pass blocker? Or does he suck at both?

I recall in 1984 a journeyman guard, Bill Bain, coming to the Rams and Dickerson ended up with 2105 that yr. Hopefully this guy can run block at OG if he sees the field.

1) Get Carter
2) Call me Ismael
3) Evans is there because of familiarity. As the season progresses and these other guys become more comfortable, Evans will be less secure.

Why not Jackson at LG and Shelton at RG?

I would like to see that, but I have a feeling they will move Kolone back to the practice squad, thus keeping Evans.

I’d stick with Jackson at RG and Shelton at Center. Shelton was playing great at Center and Jackson’s size at guard made him tough to push around.

This should be interesting because I concur, but being that Jackson is the first option for LT they might go with the natural Guard in Aboushi, however, this line combination played well I would stick with it.

Unfortunately the injuries have probably made Evans less expendable at this point. For Atlanta they put him in as a TE for a sort of jumbo package 3 times if I remember correctly. That seems to be his job now and probably will be until Jackson isn't a starter. I'd suspect if Jackson didn't have to play OG he would have been in for those plays instead of Evans.

Why not Jackson at LG and Shelton at RG?

Just my opinion, but I believe Shelton spent much more time training at LG/C, last year and this.
Things can change as they did for Edwards & Corbett following their first season here as Edwards was initially the RG and Corbett was at LG, then year 2 they swapped positions. I kind of thought that Shelton was being groomed for replacing Edwards should he likely leave in free agency after the current season, ... Bruss will return at RG next year and Anchrum can become our swing OG. Aboushi & Brewer will both be free agents also, so difficult to say whether they will be returning, although they should be relatively inexpensive.
