Rams lose TE Harkey with leg injury
• By Jim Thomas

The Rams’ No. 3 tight end, Cory Harkey, has a slight fracture in his lower leg and could miss about a month of action. Harkey suffered the injury when a Denver defensive back went low on Harkey and struck him in the leg during Saturday’s preseason game.

Although the injury is a blow to the Rams’ depth at that position, Lance Kendricks is about ready to return. Plus, there was some concern that Harkey’s injury could have been much worse. As it is, he may miss only two or three regular-season games.

Harkey, who made the team as an undrafted free agent a year, ago, has gotten a ton of reps during training camp and the preseason while Kendricks continued to work his way back from offseason knee surgery. Harkey is known as a blocking specialist, but has improved as a pass catcher since last season.

ROSTER CUTS

Here are confirmed roster cuts by the Rams so far:

QB Tim Jenkins

WR Andrew Helmick

DT Al Lapuaho

LB Joseph LeBeau

CB Robert Steeples

K/P Brett Baer

LS Jorgen Hus

Harkey's injury won't affect the status of Lutz unless we put Harkey on the 8 game PUP list. I don't see that happening because he's only projected to miss three regular season games. Bottom line is he'll still count as part of our 53.

Tough loss, maybe Stevens makes it now, because Harkey is more of a fullback/blocker like Kendricks who is not healthy yet. It's a decent part of our playbook I'm guessing.

Tough loss. Harkey was looking solid too. Thankfully Lance Kendricks is returning so this makes the loss far less painful.

I wouldn't count Potter out of the TE mix, at least yet with the Harkey injury. I have McNeil as a minor surprise late cut.

I wouldn't count out Colby Prince either, who has flashed on ST's a couple of times.

edit: Oh well, scratch that, LOL.

Yeah I agree here that a player like Kendricks & Harkey is a lot more like Eric Stevens than what Philip Lutzenkirchen is currently. Of coarse it may press the need to keep both due to Kendricks is not ready & Harkey is out.

This sure does not help out our current pathetic run attack. Guess we will see much of the two above (Stevens & Lutz) against the Ravens. I have seen Jared Cook try to block.....its not a pretty thing to see. McNeil is not that much better either. Big Back Ganaway may have pulled the rip cord too early he may have got a bonified second look with this news.

If the Rams try to keep a bunch of TE/FB/H-back type players to make up for the injured top two {Kendricks (not ready)-Harkey (out)} with Stevens, Cook, McNeil & Lutzenkirchen on the roster & just go with 5 WR's to start the season. They just cut Colby Prince.

Potter will get his looks. McNeil is too much like Cook, but much smaller.

McNeill actually did take plenty of reps in the "h-back" role. He played there quite a bit last year as well.

I think Kendricks is a lot closer to being "ready" than people might think. Not sure it effects either position. But if they do decide to keep an extra TE, it will most likely be Lutzenkirchen, and it could impact either the WR or LB numbers.

I don't remember him playing very good there. Harkey took so many snaps in the preseason, that it has been real hard for me to evaluate these guys. I know McNeil has always been in the mix, he just doesn't get many plays. He got clobbered a couple of times last week trying to block.

I like Lutz, and the injury may force us to keep him, but I don't think he would have made the 53 without it.

Hey CoachO do you think its possible Lance could return sometime this week to full practice? If so that would be great news he been out for the entire TC & pre season.

I would be shocked if he isn't back and playing Thursday.
