Rams: Here's What To Look For As OTAs To Start Next Week

By 3k

http://www.turfshowtimes.com/2015/5/27/8672865/2015-st-louis-rams-otas-minicamp-practice

This week began the four-week period during which NFL teams are allowed to begin conducting their official team activities. In fact, every team in the NFL began using their 10 allowable sessions this week...every team except the Rams.

Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher doesn't have the team coming in for the first OTA until next week, June 2. They'll use up all 10 sessions between then and June 19. They won't be using the mandatory minicamp during this period as per Fisher's history.

Back in 2009, Fisher explained to ESPN's Paul Kuharsky why he doesn't use the mandatory minicamp in this period:

My own personal feeling is if you have commitment to the offseason program then there is no need to take advantage of the mandatory minicamp....

...I don't know why you would take a professional athlete in the middle of the offseason and make him practice twice a day. I think it's a setback. I think what happens is, if you were to go ahead and have the mandatory minicamp, our attendance would drop off the weeks to follow and that's not our intention. What we want is a commitment to the program, four or five days a week. And we're getting that.

It's not an unfair argument. It just certainly looks strange when you're the only team clinging to that argument while 31 other teams do things differently.

In any case, here are the big storylines for next week.

Offensive Line Depth Chart

After the first-round selection of Todd Gurley, the Rams' 2015 NFL Draft class revolves largely around the collection of new offensive linemen they picked up weeks ago. As has been said before and will be oft repeated heading into week one of the 2015 season, the Rams are bringing just one week one starter from their 2014 offensive line back in Rodger Saffold. Greg Robinson will look to improve on a shaky rookie season that sporadically flashed justifications for his selection as the #2 player in the 2014 NFL Draft. Those other three spots though will be where the Rams rotate options to get comfortable with a starting five for August and into the regular season.

Healthy, Wealthy & Wise

Rodger Saffold and Brian Quick are both still rehabbing injured shoulders, though back in January Jim Thomas reported Saffold would likely be able to participate in non-contact drills. Isaiah Pead might be able to return after injuring his knee in the 2014 preseason. And of course, rookie RB Todd Gurley is still sidelined from his ACL injury in mid-November last year. The NFL world winced at initial video and word of an injury to Jacksonville rookie DE Dante Fowler. The news he tore his ACL was both shocking but worth remembering. Injuries are part of the football calendar, not just the regular season. The Rams would do well to get through camp and into the preseason as healthy as possible. That they enter OTAs as healthy as they are is a good start.

Rookie Standouts

With Gurley sidelined, much of the attention will be on Rob Havenstein, Jamon Brown and Andrew Donnal on the offensive line as top-120 picks. Sean Mannion will get plenty of scrutiny too. But don't forget the back end of the Rams' 2015 draft class as well as their UDFA haul. E.J. Gaines went from 6th round pick trying to make the team to perhaps the team's best cover corner. Johnny Hekker was an undrafted free agent in 2012. Now, he's the recipient of the contract containing the highest amount of guaranteed money in history for a punter or kicker.

The road to making the team begins here.

(That's completely not true, but it sounds better than the alternatives. Let's move on.)

Defensive Chemistry

It's been a decade since the Rams' offense was markedly a better unit than their defense. That likely doesn't change in 2015. And despite not adding a defensive draft pick until round 7, some big free agent signings in DT Nick Fairley and LB Akeem Ayers through some key rotation questions into the mix. Getting all the pieces in place and starting to figure out the first attempts to answer those rotation questions is going to be a key to the entire preseason, let alone OTAs.

So enjoy the week off, Rams fans. We're turning up a week late to the party.

Rams begin OTAs next week
By Nate Latsch

http://stl.scout.com/story/1549684-rams-begin-otas-next-week?s=124

The St. Louis Rams will be back on the field next week, beginning Tuesday, for the start of their organized team activities.
The team’s schedule for OTAs is as follows: June 2, June 4-5, June 8-9, June 11, June 15-16 and June 18-19.

The Rams have plenty of work to do coming off a 6-10 season. They have a new offensive coordinator in Frank Cignetti, a new starting quarterback in Nick Foles and a revamped offensive line that returns just two starters, Rodger Saffold and Greg Robinson, from last year.

The offensive scheme doesn’t figure to change much in the transition from Brian Schottenheimer to Cignetti, who was promoted from quarterbacks coach, but all eyes will be on the new QB and the new faces lining up in front of him.

Foles, who is entering his fourth season, has plenty to prove going into the final year of his rookie contract.

He was a Pro Bowler in 2013 when he threw for 2,891 yards, with 27 touchdowns against two interceptions and a QB rating of 119.2 in 13 games. But in 2014 he threw for six touchdowns, five interceptions and had a QB rating of 79.1 in seven games before suffering a season-ending injury.

The 26-year-old could be a better fit for the Rams’ offensive scheme than he was for Chip Kelly’s system in Philadelphia, but he will be working behind an inexperience line and no longer has playmakers around him like LeSean McCoy, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

The offensive line will have two familiar faces in Saffold and Robinson, but will have three new starters in some form or another.

Robinson, the No. 2 overall pick out of Auburn a year ago, is penciled in at left tackle after playing both there and left guard as a rookie.

Saffold has played every position up front except center during his first four seasons with the Rams. The OTA sessions will give the media the first opportunity to see where Jeff Fisher and Co. are using Saffold, but he is expected to play one of the guard spots.

The Rams have three players competing for the job at center: Tim Barnes, Barrett Jones and Demetrius Rhaney.

Barnes, who was re-signed this offseason, started four games at center in 2013. Jones, a fourth-round pick out of Alabama in 2013, has only played in 10 games as a reserve in the past two seasons. A seventh-round pick a year ago, Rhaney was injured in training camp and was on injured reserve for the remainder of his rookie campaign.

The other two starting spots up front could go to rookies Rob Havenstein and Jamon Brown, the Rams’ second- and third-round picks last month.

The 6-foot-7, 321-pound Havenstein was a three-year starter at right tackle at Wisconsin and could slide into that spot right away in St. Louis after Joe Barksdale left via free agency. Brown played the strong tackle spot at Louisville but is likely to play one of the guard spots, wherever Saffold doesn’t play, with the Rams.

It has been 6 years since a Fisher coached team has had a winning record. I think his teams NEED all the extra work they can get until they prove otherwise. I don't know of any coach in any sport that wields the type of power Fisher seems to have, while boasting a career that has been relatively free of achievement.

Having said that, he is my team's coach, so I hope he's right.

So was this LT or RT?

I get the Fisher & not wanting OTA's to disrupt family...Still it makes me wonder about the cause of the slow starts...Why?

I gotta wonder too. The slow starts have taken the wind out of our sails each year. We go into the season with high hopes only to see them crushed by a 1-3 or 2-4 start. Next thing you know we're into December looking to play spoiler. Hard to get any traction when you're trying to work uphill the rest of the season.

Then again neither do the Eagles!! for the most part.

I guess it doesn't matter the "why" when it comes to past slow starts. Maybe it was because Fisher approaches off season the same way every year... maybe not.

He does wield a lot of power; I suspect that was baked into the agreement when Kroenke hired him.

All I know is... we simply cannot afford another slow start.

That very first game is a "statement" game... who will be sending the right statement? The Rams or the Seahawks? I need it to be the Rams!

One other thought... if we were a consistently winning team, would how Fisher approaches off season be a discussion point? ;)

Rams OTA Preview: What To Watch For At Every Position
by Blaine Grisak

http://ramblinfan.com/2015/05/28/st-louis-rams-ota-preview-what-to-watch-for-at-every-position/

The NFL season has officially began as the majority of the league’s franchises have begun OTA’s. However, the Rams are the only team that did not begin offseason workouts this week. That all changes next week as the Rams will begin their season on Tuesday.

Next week marks the first time we’ll get a look at the Rams on the field following the team’s crazy offseason. These drills are strictly non-contact (no pads allowed) so it’s not quite real football by any means, but it’s still something.

There are a ton of storylines to follow. Here’s everything you need to know, including a position-by-position guide of what to watch for this week.

Rams Practice Schedule

OTA Offseason Workouts: June 2, June 4-5, June 8-9, June 11, June 15-16, June 18-19

Mandatory Minicamp: None

What to Watch At Every Position
Offense

Quarterback

The St. Louis Rams will have a new face at quarterback for the first time since they drafted Sam Bradford number one overall in 2010. His name is Nick Foles, and he looks to be the leader that this offense needs to take them over the hump.

Aside from Foles the Rams also have rookie Sean Mannion as well as of course Austin Davis and Case Keenum competing for the backup quarterback spot.

Running Back

Running plays are boring in practices like this since there’s no contact. However, Tre Mason will be looking to build off of last years breakout season and it will be the first time we get to see Todd Gurley, the Rams’ first round pick. Gurley probably will be limited, but it will still be exciting to see the rookie.

Tight End

Jared Cook and Lance Kendricks are obviously the top two guys at this position. Not really a whole lot to talk about here. You also cant forget about Corey Harkey. Can Alex Bayer and Justice Cunningham stand out in camp?

Wide Receiver

As always, this will be a position to watch even if Brian Quick isn’t able to participate as he recovers from injury. Still, with Tavon Austin, Kenny Britt and Stedman Bailey, this group is young and intriguing. Can Chris Givens get back to his rookie form or will rookie Bud Sasser take his place?

Offensive Line

This will be the position to watch. Everyone want to know what the offensive line will look like and who will be starting where. Not to mention the pressure and anticipation surrounding the performances of rookies like Rob Havenstein and Jamon Brown.

This is where the Rams’ questions are on offense, therefore this is where all eyes will be come Tuesday.
Defense

Defensive End

Chris Long and Robert Quinn are obviously the top two guys here, but aside from them, who will be rotating in with these guys? William Hayes and Eugene Sims are presumably those guys, but will someone like 7th round pick Martin Ifedi come out and perform?

Defensive tackle

This might be an underrated position to watch. Aaron Donald, the defensive rookie of the year, is the number one guy here. However, the Rams did just pick up Nick Fairley in free agency which will give some competition to Michael Brockers. Who comes out on top?

Outside Linebacker

Alec Ogletree has been impressive the last two years, but the Rams did just sign Akeem Ayers to possibly take over the other side. It will be interesting to see what Ayers looks like and if he becomes that second tier free agency signing that pays off. The Rams also have some undrafted guys that will be looking to make the roster.

Middle Linebacker

Not much to talk about here. James Laurinaitis has been the guy here for the last several years and will continue to be that until the day he leaves St. Louis.

Cornerback

This is a position where the Rams do have some depth. What will be interesting to watch here is if 2014 6th round pick, E.J. Gaines, overtakes a guy like Truman Johnson as the number two cornerback.

It is assumed that Janoris Jenkins is the number one guy, but can Gaines pass Johnson? The Rams also have to see what they have in Lamarcus Joyner who had a disappointing rookie campaign.

Safety

T.J. McDonald is set at the strong safety spot, but as far as free safety goes, the team seems to be content with Rodney McLeod. It may be possible that Joyner maybe moves here or if Mark Barron can move over. This is one spot on the Rams defense that is weak.
Special teams

Kicker

Greg Zuerlein needs to improve his consistency from mid-long range. He is the guy, but there is room for improvement.

Punter

Johnny Hekker…That is all.

Punt Returner

Tavon Austin excels at a couple things on the football field and punt returning is one of them.

Kick Returner

Benny Cunningham was a solid kick returner last year. Does he remain in that role with the clutter at running back?

General Questions

• Which players won’t be ready to fully practice yet? Keeping an eye on Todd Gurley, Brian Quick, and Barrett Jones in particular.

• The Rams have dealt with preseason and offseason injuries in the past. Will they make it out of 2015 ok?

• There a bunch of new faces on the offensive line. Will there be issues due to a lack of chemistry?

So, as you can see, there are a lot of questions. Some will be answered sooner than others. It should be an interesting spring that sets up for an even more exciting summer.
