MOBILE, ALA. • Because of the recent hiring of Jeff Fisher as head coach, and the lack of a new general manager, the Rams have a scaled-down contingent at the Senior Bowl. Fisher decided to stay away from Mobile, figuring he could get more done assembling his staff by working in St. Louis or Nashville.

With one exception his coaching staff hires —both official and unofficial —have stayed away as well, with at least some of them helping Fisher put together the rest of the staff. The only Rams coach known to be at the Senior Bowl is new defensive line coach Mike Waufel.

So that has put the onus on the Rams' personnel department to handle most of the on-site evaluations. And almost all of the Rams' scouting staff is on hand. Executive vice president of football operations Kevin Demoff came down Wednesday, just for a day of catching up with agents and scouts —and perhaps potential general manager candidates.

The GM interview process resumes this weekend when Arizona director of player personnel Steve Keim visits the Rams. The interview may not take place Saturday as originally reported; it may be Sunday.

New York Jets vice president of college scouting Joey Clinkscales; Miami director of player personnel Brian Gaine; and Indianapolis director of player personnel Tom Telesco could be interviewed next week. They were all on the original candidate list. In addition, Atlanta director of player personnel Les Snead is expected to get a second interview. Snead's first interview was with Demoff only and took place before the Fisher hire.

Now that Fisher is on board, plans call for him to be involved in the GM interview process, so the Rams may want to get Snead in front of Fisher. Demoff also has added a couple of new names to the GM candidate list; their identities are not known at this point.

McGinnis official

The Rams made it official Wednesday, announcing that Dave McGinnis was joining Fisher's staff as assistant head coach.

"I feel very fortunate that we were able to bring Dave aboard," Fisher said in a statement. "He's been in a variety of roles in this league, from position coach all the way up to head coach. His vast knowledge and experience will be valuable assets to our staff."

The 2012 season will mark McGinnis' 39th year in coaching. He spent the past eight seasons with the Tennessee Titans; the first seven of those eight were under Fisher as either a linebackers coach or assistant head coach/linebackers.

McGinnis spent 3½ seasons as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, from 2000-03. In 1999, he nearly became head coach of the Chicago Bears. But the Bears prematurely announced McGinnis' hire; he took offense to that and didn't take the job. That's of note to Rams fans because McGinnis would've taken Mike Martz, then the Washington Redskins' quarterbacks coach, with him as Bears offensive coordinator. But when the Bears' job fell through, Martz came to St. Louis as offensive coordinator in '99 —and the Greatest Show on Turf was born.

Senior bits

Rams RB Steven Jackson will continue his world travels this offseason; he's headed to South America for a month. ... With all sorts of injury problems last season at cornerback, the Rams could be targeting that position at some point in the draft. The best cornerback at the Senior Bowl may be Georgia's Brandon Boykin, but Donnie Fletcher of Boston College and Janoris Jenkins of North Alabama also have had their moments this week.

Cue the "Fire Fisher" threads b/c he isn't taking advantage of a situation.
