As pointed out recently in this space, St. Louis had a lousy showing in Super Bowl television ratings — tying Austin, Texas, for 52nd place among the 56 major markets in which viewership was measured electronically.
And while the local NFL team also hasn’t done very well in ratings for the home team’s game compared to other league markets, the reality is that Rams fans have been resilient in their TV viewership of the club.
The Rams have the NFL’s second-worst record (49-110-1) dating to the 2005 season. But in recent years St. Louisans have watched the team on television at a much higher rate than the club’s winning percentage.
Figures compiled by Nielsen for the last three seasons show that despite a streak of non-winning seasons that now stands at 11, the Rams on average have had a better rating in St. Louis than six other teams have had in their market.
In fact, in each of the last three seasons St. Louisans have watched their club at a higher rate than fans of both New York teams, the Miami Dolphins and the Oakland Raiders.
And in 2012, the St. Louis market pulled higher ratings for Rams telecasts than the San Francisco bay area drew for the 49ers — who went to the Super Bowl that season.
The breakdown:
