There are half a million reasons why new defensive tackle Nick Fairley should be in shape for the Rams entering training camp.
The most interesting thing in the one-year, $5 million contract signed by Fairley last week was a $500,000 workout bonus. That's a monster amount.
Under the current regime, Rams contracts rarely include workout bonuses, which are tied to participation by a player in the team's official offseason conditioning program. Usually it takes about 80 percent participation to earn such a bonus.
The $500,000 amount for Fairley is believed to be the largest offseason workout bonus paid to a Rams player since the franchise moved to St. Louis in 1995. This year, the Rams' offseason conditioning program begins April 20.
Fairley had weight issues during his time in Detroit, reportedly weighing as much as 320 pounds for the Lions. When he met with reporters Friday at Rams Park, a trim-looking Fairley said he weighed 280 pounds and would actually add weight in the form of muscle over the offseason. Fairley hired a personal chef while in Detroit in an effort to eat right and said he was looking for a new chef in St. Louis.
Fairley's contract also includes a $2.5 million base salary and a $1.5 million roster bonus. There's also a $31,250 bonus for every game he's on the game-day roster, adding up $500,000 if he plays in all 16 games.
The contract of free-agent linebacker Akeem Ayers also has been posted with the league. As previously reported, he gets $6 million over two years. A total of $2.75 million of that amount is guaranteed.
Ayers earns a base salary of $1.25 million this year with a roster bonus of $1.5 million. In 2016, he gets at base salary of $2 million with a $500,000 roster bonus. In addition there are per-game roster bonuses that can earn him an additional $250,000 in 2015 and an additional $500,000 in 2016.
