Rams had no choice but to trade up for a quarterback - Chris Wesseling NFL.com

The '90 Colts were 8-8 in '89 and traded LT Hinton and WR Rison for the #1 used to select Jeff George (we ALMOST got the #1 in 2014, when 2013 WAS had the wheels come off with second worst record in the league, not sure how many wins we had in 2013, maybe 7-8-1, we took Donald at #13 with our own pick). Plainly, simply, big advantage for Goff relative to typical rookie QB like Winston and Mariota going to 2-3 win teams (after a historically good opener, Mariota struggled mightily in the remaining games, but TEN had a bad team - thus their #1 overall in 2016, which they flipped to us for Goff). No doubt he is going to an unusually good situation, SOME of the national media (Wesseling being first and foremost) have caught onto this. As does Wentz, he goes to PHI (same 7-9 record) via #2 pick, they were originally #13 before the double move up including sending LB Alonoso and CB Maxwell to MIA for the #8, as a sort of base camp or staging areas used to mount the final assault on the second overall pick.
