Rams exploring new practice schedule

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- In search of any edge they can get, the St. Louis Rams spent time this offseason taking a closer look at every facet of their football operation.
Included in that study was an examination of when to push forward on practice and when to offer time off. Based on the results, the Rams are trying something new in the opening week. They practiced Tuesday and Wednesday and will have a light walkthrough Thursday before another practice Friday.
“I don’t know what everybody else is doing in the league," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. "This is just an in-house study that we’ve done.”
For most NFL teams, including the Rams under Fisher, the work week consists of a recovery day Monday after a Sunday game followed by Tuesday off and practices on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
When the Rams get into regular season mode next week, the plan will be to eliminate the light work on Thursday and replace it with an actual day off to replace the Tuesday off-day. Under that plan, they'll have normal practices on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
“That’ll take place next week," Fisher said. "(Thursday) we’re going to do some things, but we’re not going to have a full-speed practice. All of the research is showing us that it might make more sense to take some time off and rest and recover closer to the game as opposed to Monday, Tuesday.”
The Rams, of course, aren't the first team to take such a step and investigate the best time to practice and the best time to rest. In Philadelphia, for example, Chip Kelly has been practicing on a different schedule since arriving in the league in 2013. Kelly's Eagles have Monday off with practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and nothing but stretching or walkthroughs on Friday and Saturday.
Long before Kelly came along, Don Shula's Miami Dolphins also used Monday as the day off with Tuesday practices.
As for the Rams, we'll see what they do for the rest of the season, but for at least the opening week, Fisher and the Rams are trying something new.
