Nah we're gonna convert him to a fullback, McVay totally changing the offense half way thru the season. Also worth noting he's a former Patriot being claimed before we play them :D

I like this move. Was a very talented edge rusher out of college. I know he has had some injuries, but it can't hurt to kick the tires.

MCVay tweet to Rivers: "When you meet me in my office, make sure you bring a copy of your Patriots playbook".

Rams claim Derek Rivers from Patriots
Brandon Staley has another prospect to work with

Los Angeles Rams have claimed former New England Patriots defensive end Derek Rivers and will be adding him to the roster this week. The Rams had several openings after placing three players on injured reserve last week.

The Rams claimed former Patriots DE Derek Rivers off of waivers. The move will become official tomorrow with the Rams playing tonight vs. the Bucs.

The fact that Los Angeles was able to claim Rivers despite being relatively low on the priority order would imply that there weren’t many suitors for the former third round pick who has struggled to even be active for games throughout his career.

The 86th overall pick in 2017 out of Youngstown State, Rivers was seen by many as a potential steal for Bill Belichick. Some would even say “another steal” for Belichick, but this would prove to be both untrue of Rivers and untrue of Belichick, who might actually have one of the worst track records in the draft for any general manager of the last decade. Of course, few general managers get as many opportunities for draft picks as Belichick has had.

Rivers tore his ACL during his first training camp and missed all of his rookie season. He returned to play in six games in 2018, recording two tackles and one sack. Rivers was again injured in the 2019 preseason and sat out the entire year again. He made the team out of training camp in 2020 and through eight games, he has four tackles, four QB hits and 1.5 sacks.

The Rams can mix Rivers into their linebacker depth but it’s not even clear if he can help on special teams; Rivers has only played in 21 career special teams snaps. He may be on the practice squad or back on waivers soon but could give Los Angeles a player to potentially keep around and develop in 2021.

Excuse me, but the Rams shouldn't take any player from the Patriots! Glad Brandin Cooks is the hell out of here...why bring more Patriot crud?

Right!? Could you imagine the kind of shame you would live with if you were a Bucs fan right now? Disgusting!

I like this signing and IMO he offers a lot more upsides than Okoronkwo ever has. The problem with Rivers is his inability to stay healthy. But as a rotational OLB behind Lewis or Floyd he's got upsides that Okoronkwo doesn't have. Rivers has good speed for the position timed at 4.6. He's got good agility to go along with that speed. Coming into the 2017 draft he was considered not only a good pass rushing prospect but also as setting a hard edge in the run defense. This signing is more about next year when they will lose Ebukam and lack the quality depth behind both edges (Floyd & Lewis who I see as their starters next year).

This is a low risk / high reward kind of signing that could pay dividends down the road. He's better in many ways to Polite who seems for whatever reason to be a board favorite. Polite lacks the speed you want off the edge, and has never been known to set a hard edge (even now). Rivers will give Staley positional flexibility in the way Hollins has.

Count me as one who likes this signing not only for this year but into the future as well. He can easily bump Calais back to the PS for a roster spot. Once Rivers gets up to speed he will make the Rams 5 deep with quality players at OLB.

Speaking of Hollins he looked good in coverage against Gronk. He has the size and speed to match up with most TEs and I think we will see more of that.

Is he bringing the playbook and the secret spy videos with him?
