IT’S GAME DAY!

The GDT is a live thread tradition here at ROD.

While we all get fired up watching the game, please remember our core principles; we always show respect for our team and each other.

Despite the emotional highs and lows watching a game, we will moderate this thread with that in mind, however please refrain from name calling. This applies to players, the Rams organization, and others.

This is the core rule of the GDT. Moderators are tasked to issue thread bans, at a minimum, to maintain this standard.

This is our team. Win or lose. Good days and bad.

Go Rams!

Please be advised moderators may issue “caution” post ratings to keep this thread on track. If you see this, don’t freak out; these are not warnings but meant to steer conversation away from warnings.

Our goal... watching a game is fun. So, let’s have fun in here.

Game Preview: Rams Face Lions with Opportunity to Clinch NFC West Title

It’s back to football for the Los Angeles Rams (10-1) coming of their Week 12 bye, and next up is first-year head coach Matt Patricia’s Detroit Lions.

The Lions (4-7) sit at the bottom of the NFC North and are coming off a 23-16 loss to L.A.’s Week 14 opponent, the Chicago Bears. Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw two interceptions and no touchdowns in the club’s annual game on Thanksgiving, but the matchup was close throughout.

“I saw a team that played wire-to-wire with an 8-3 football team on Thanksgiving,” head coach Sean McVay said this week. “You see them beat a team like New England and Carolina. So, this is a quality football team that we've got to be ready to go.”

McVay isn’t worried about his division-leading Rams being ready to go coming off the late-season bye, which he and many of his players said was much needed and appreciated — especially since it came over Thanksgiving.

“I think guys feel fresh and recharged coming off the bye,” McVay said. “I have full confidence in our players' ability to kind of just seamlessly handle however it is that we want to operate and ultimately get ready to go for a tough team on Sunday."

The Rams dominated the Giants 51-17 in New York coming off last year’s bye, and if McVay’s division-leading Rams plan to stay in the win column after the week off, the head coach knows it starts with slowing Stafford.

McVay said Stafford’s ability to make throws from anywhere on the field likens him to both quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers, and could cause problems for the L.A. defense.

“Matthew Stafford is a great quarterback,” McVay said. “You see why he's a No. 1 overall pick. He's got the ability to create in rhythm, off-schedule.”

Cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman agreed with his head coach, saying Stafford doesn’t make things easy on defensive backs. Robey-Coleman laid out a plan to prevent Detroit’s signal caller from creating.

“We just got to keep him in the pocket, get some good pass rush, and let the backend take care of the no fly zone and just go out there and play football,” Robey-Coleman said.

L.A.’s secondary might receive a bit of a veteran facelift on Sunday, with the possible return of cornerback Aqib Talib. Talib returned to practice from injured reserve on Monday, and McVay said this week that if things go the way his staff anticipates, he expects his All-Pro to join his secondary against Detroit.

“Just experience, sharpen up our communication a little bit,” Talib said when asked what he can bring to his one-loss Rams. “I think we get our communication in order, we eliminate two, three big plays a game, it’ll make us that much better on defense.”

Talib helping to prevent big plays may come as music to defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ ears. Second-year John Johnson said eliminating big plays is one of his group’s main focuses coming out of the bye.

“Our emphasis coming in today was, ‘You have to limit the big plays,’” Johnson said on Monday. “Zero is what we are shooting for, but if you keep the big plays to a minimum I think everything else will fall into place.”

While the Lions haven’t been especially dangerous via big plays in 2018, the Rams have certainly given up some. The defense has given up 12 passing plays that have totalled at least 40 yards, which is the most in the NFL. Additionally, the Rams have allowed 46 passing plays totalling at least 20 yards — which trails only the Kansas City Chiefs.

Stafford has thrown 17 touchdowns in 2018 — five to youthful wide receiver Kenny Golladay. Golladay and veteran running back LaGarrette Blount, who has five rushing touchdowns in limited minutes this season, might be looked to for the majority of Detroit’s offense this week. Detroit’s starting running back for much of the season, Kerryon Johnson, is doubtful after missing last week’s game to a knee sprain, and the Lions’ second-leading receiver Marvin Jones was placed on injured reserve earlier this week.

Talib’s return and the Lions’ limping offense could fare well for the Los Angeles defense, which forced five takeaways against Kansas City. Stafford’s thrown 10 interceptions this season, and has three games with at least two interceptions — including Week 1 when the former Georgia Bulldog through four picks against the Jets.

On offense for the Rams, quarterback Jared Goff has been readying for the Lions’ pass rush.

“The pass rush is really good,” Goff said plainly. “Anytime [Lions DE Ezekiel] ‘Ziggy’ Ansah is on the field you have to be aware of him and he's a great player. And then just continue to take care of the ball. Just continue to be good in the pocket and not let them get to it."

Ansah missed seven weeks this season to a shoulder injury, but has added a sack to his season total (4.0) in each of his two previous games.

Detroit’s defense ranks No. 9 in sacks this season, with 32 through 11 games. The Lions’ cast of pass rushers also includes linebackers Devon Kennard, Jarrad Davis, and defensive end Romeo Okwara — who account for 6.0, 4.0, and 5.5 sacks this season, respectively.

In the secondary, cornerback Darius Slay leads the way with two interceptions this season. However, the Lions are tied at No. 26 with just 10 takeaways in 2018.

The Detroit defense allows 355 yards per game, which is No. 13 in the NFL.

Goff could be in for a record-breaking day in the Motor City. The third-year quarterback is 257 yards shy of a single season career high in passing yards (3,805) and three touchdowns shy of a single season career high (29).

If Goff throws for 400 yards against the Lions, he’ll break the franchise record for most 400-yard passing games in a season with three.

Sunday’s game also might come with some significance to veteran defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. Suh will face the Detroit Lions for the first time in his career after spending five seasons as the anchor of the Lions’ defensive line. Suh was drafted No. 2 overall by the Lions in the 2010 NFL Draft and had success with the club. Suh was 2010’s defensive rookie of the year and a three-time All Pro in Detroit, before leaving for Miami in 2015.

“I always resort back to the 2014 team that I had in Detroit — amazing year, amazing coach that I had there in [former Lions HC] Jim Caldwell,” Suh said this week. “Did some special things, broke some records — so I think the next step is to go further in the playoffs and hopefully get a championship.”

The Rams have an opportunity to clinch the NFC West for the second-straight season on Sunday in Detroit. With a win against the Lions or a Seahawks loss, L.A.’s playoff ticket is officially punched, and a win might be that much sweeter considering the NFC-leading Saints’ loss to the Cowboys on Thursday Night Football this week.

The Rams have not won back-to-back division titles since 1978 and 1979.

“We've earned this opportunity, we've worked for it, we've won the games to put ourselves in this opportunity so go take advantage of it and go have fun and go seize the moment,” Goff said of the chance to clinch. “These are the games that truly can make things happen and we know that.”

“We've still got five, six weeks left and to be able to do that – secure a playoff spot - I mean, who wouldn't want to do that,” running back Todd Gurley said this week. “So, the only team standing in our way now is Detroit."

Kickoff is set for 10:00 a.m. PST.

Detroit Lions vs. Los Angeles Rams: Scouting report, prediction
Dave Birkett

Free Press sports writers Dave Birkett and Carlos Monarrez preview the Detroit Lions vs. Los Angeles Rams game for Sunday at Ford Field. Carlos Monarrez and Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press

Free Press sports writer Dave Birkett breaks down Sunday's game between the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams at Ford Field:

Lions run offense vs. Rams run defense

The Lions will be without running back Kerryon Johnson for the second straight game due to a knee injury, which means it’s the LeGarrette Blount-Theo Riddick show once again. Blount had a season-high 88 yards on 19 carries in the Lions’ Thanksgiving loss to the Chicago Bears, but he had most of his success in the second half of that game as the Lions kept the score close enough to keep him involved in the second half.

They won’t have the luxury of waiting for their running game to get going this week as the Rams have one of the highest-scoring offenses in the NFL. Blount needs to do a better job getting upfield, and the offensive line needs to be sharp early or this will turn into a game in which the Lions use passing back Riddick on most downs.

The Rams rank just 21st against the run at 119.9 yards per game, and teams like the Seattle Seahawks (190 and 273 yards rushing in their two games) and New Orleans Saints (141 yards) have had success on the ground. Of course, the Lions don’t have a running game on par with either of those teams, and they have to contend with the best defensive tackle tandem in football in Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh.

Edge: Rams

Lions pass offense vs. Rams pass defense

Like their running game, the Lions have a depleted passing attack. They don’t have Marvin Jones or Golden Taint, but they do have designs on getting the ball out of Matthew Stafford’s hands quickly and limiting the number of hits he takes from an aggressive, mobile pass rush.

Stafford has 13 turnovers on the season, including seven in the Lions’ last four losses. If he’s careless with the ball Sunday, the Lions won’t stand a chance. But as conscious as the Lions want to be of the Rams’ pass rush and of controlling tempo, they need to take more shots downfield than the two passes over 15 yards they attempted last week.

Donald leads the NFL in sacks and defensive coordinator Wade Phillips moves him, Suh and Michael Brockers all over the field. The Rams tend to give up yards in chunks at times, but they’re tied for fifth in the league in takeaways and they expect to get top cornerback Aqib Talib back from injury to pair with Marcus Peters and Lamarcus Joyner in a talented secondary.

Edge: Rams

Rams run offense vs. Lions run defense

Todd Gurley is a legitimate MVP candidate for the Rams as the NFL’s second-leading rusher (94.8 ypg) and one of the most versatile backs in the game. He’s a big part of the Rams’ passing attack with 43 catches, has an NFL-best 17 touchdowns and does a lot of his damage against sub defensive packages because the Rams use “11” personnel with three receivers on the field so often.

Gurley is averaging 5 yards per carry, and he has the benefit of running behind one of the league’s best offensive lines. Andrew Whitworth at 36 years old is still one of the game’s elite left tackles, and Rob Havenstein is a powerful run blocker at right tackle.

The Lions have the league’s best run defense over the last three weeks, holding the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears (twice) to fewer than 60 yards. Damon Harrison has been a revelation at nose tackle, and the Lions have gotten good play from A’Shawn Robinson and Da’Shawn Hand up front. They’ll have to rely on their line to keep Gurley in check because Jared Goff will throw for 400 yards if they commit too many resources to the run.

Edge: Rams

Rams pass offense vs. Lions pass defense

Goff is the Rams’ other MVP candidate. He averages 9.3 yards per pass attempt, has 26 touchdowns against just six interceptions and is the NFL’s third-highest rated passer.

The Rams excel in the play-action passing game thanks to Gurley’s presence in the backfield, their well-fortified line that gives Goff plenty of time to throw and speedy receivers like Brandin Cooks and Robert Woods who make plays downfield. Coach Sean McVay stresses defenses like few other play-callers by working at a high tempo and always changing his formations.

The Lions have been mostly solid in their pass defense, at least when Darius Slay’s on the field, but they don’t get enough pressure on opposing quarterbacks or create enough turnovers to be one of the league’s top units. Slay could shadow Cooks on Sunday, which would leave Nevin Lawson against Woods. The Lions’ lack of speed at safety could be an issue against a Rams team that’s second in the NFL in passes of 20-plus yards.

Edge: Rams

Special teams

Not only do the Rams have one of the best offenses in the NFL and the leading candidate for Defensive Player of the Year (Donald), they also have one of the league’s best special-teams units. Greg Zuerlein seems fine after missing time with a groin injury last year and has one of the strongest legs in the NFL. Jojo Natson ranks fifth among qualifying players at 13.4 yards per punt return and the Rams have blocked two punts this year.

The Lions have been better on special teams of late, cutting down on their penalties and doing a better job covering returns. Matt Prater remains Mr. Reliable in the field-goal department, while many of the Lions’ opponents have struggled in the kicking game. With Jamal Agnew still a couple weeks away from potentially playing in games, the Lions don’t offer much in the return department.

Edge: Rams

Overall

I don’t know how many times I’ve given one team the matchup edge in every category in the nine years I’ve been doing this for the Free Press, but it’s not many. That’s how dominant the Rams are, and how depleted the Lions are on offense. Goff and Gurley are both MVP candidates, Donald will win Defensive Player of the Year, and the Lions are without two of their three best offensive weapons. They’ll need a great defensive performance, on par with what the Dallas Cowboys did to the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night, to pull the upset, and I just don’t think they’re equipped to do that. Unless Blount has a great day and the Lions force a couple turnovers on defense, I don’t see this game being all that close.

Pick: Rams 35, Lions 21

Rams vs. Lions: 4 key matchups to watch
By: Cameron DaSilva

Detroit doesn’t pose much of a threat to Los Angeles, even with the long road trip beforehand, but no team can be taken lightly in the NFL. These four matchups will likely decide the outcome of the game, which makes them crucial for the Rams to win.

Aaron Donald vs. Frank Ragnow
Donald is always enemy No. 1 for opposing offenses and that will certainly be the case this weekend. Ragnow, a rookie, will face his toughest test yet in slowing down Donald, which no offensive line has been able to do all year. He’ll certainly get some help from center Graham Glasgow and left tackle Taylor Decker at times, but it’ll be up to Ragnow to limit Donald’s disruptions.

In two games against the Lions, Donald has four sacks and five tackles for loss, so he’s had plenty of success when facing Detroit. Don’t expect him to be shut out of the sack column on Sunday. This is a very favorable matchup.

Andrew Whitworth vs. Romeo Okwara and Ezekiel Ansah
The Lions rotate their pass rushers plenty, especially at right defensive end. Okwara plays most early downs with Ansah subbing in for passing situations and each offers his own skill set. Okwara is second on the team in sacks with 5.5 while Ansah only has four, but Whitworth will have to be on his toes with both players staying fresh throughout the game.

Whitworth has been one of the best left tackles in the league this season and shouldn’t have too much trouble with the Lions’ pass rushers, but Ansah is a dynamic athlete and can be a handful at times.

Todd Gurley vs. Jarrad Davis
Davis is one of the worst linebackers in the game today and struggles to defend both the run and the pass. The Lions’ run defense has been phenomenal the past three weeks with only 148 yards allowed, but this is a matchup that sets up well for Gurley. He can take advantage of Davis’ coverage lapses in the passing game as a receiver, while also potentially ripping off big runs.

The Lions have allowed three touchdown runs of at least 50 yards this season, yet Gurley’s longest carry is just 29 yards. This could be the game where he breaks off a long one and posts a big number in the rushing column.

Rams CBs vs. Kenny Golladay
With Golden Taint in Philly and Marvin Jones out for the year, all eyes will be on Golladay. The Rams won’t stick Aqib Talib or Marcus Peters on him all day long, instead keeping their corners on respective sides. Golladay also plays the slot some, which means Nickell Robey-Coleman will also have to cover the young wideout.

No matter where he lines up, the Rams have to contain him. He’s a big-play threat, someone who can make great catches “above the rim” and create chunk gains deep downfield. The Lions don’t have many playmakers on offense, so the Rams can afford to focus most of their attention on Golladay.

https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2018/11/30/nfl-rams-lions-week-13-concerns-sunday/

Rams' 3 biggest causes for concern against the Lions
By: Cameron DaSilva

All indications point toward the Los Angeles Rams winning on Sunday and moving to 11-1. They’re facing a depleted Detroit Lions team, which doesn’t have the offense to match the Rams’.

There’s very little reason to believe Detroit will pull off the upset, but there are a few concerns for the Rams entering this one. For starters, they’ll be a long way from home playing in the early kickoff window for the first time all year.

Traveling east for early kickoff
Traveling to the eastern time zone is never easy for a team located on the West Coast, especially when kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET. The Rams have only done it once since 2017 (51-17 win over Giants), so this is somewhat unfamiliar for Sean McVay’s squad. This season, West Coast teams traveling to the eastern time zone for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff are 4-5. Granted, some of the losses were by the Raiders and 49ers, but that doesn’t make it an easy task.

The Rams are heading out on Friday to prepare for the time difference, which should help players get accustomed to the early kickoff. It’s a smart move by McVay, but the early kickoff could have an impact on how the Rams start against the Lions.

Lions’ stout run defense of late
No team in the NFL has allowed fewer rushing yards in their last three games than the Lions. And it’s not particularly close, either. They’ve given up just 148 yards the past three weeks, which is 46 yards clear of the next-closest team, the Saints.

Opponents are averaging just 2.8 yards per carry in that stretch, largely thanks to the arrival of Damon Harrison. Few teams have truly slowed down the Rams’ second-ranked rushing attack as L.A. has only totaled fewer than 100 yards on the ground three times this season, but the Lions could make it four.

Todd Gurley and the running game set up the play-action pass, but that can’t happen if things don’t get going on the ground. If Detroit can shut down Gurley, it could have a chance to pull off the upset.

Matching up with Kenny Golladay
The Rams have really struggled to stop No. 1 receivers and that’s exactly what Golladay has become for the Lions. Here’s how the top receiver has fared against L.A. in the past four games:

  • Tyreek Hill: 10 catches, 215 yards, 2 TD
  • Tyler Lockett: 5 catches, 67 yards, 1 TD
  • Michael Thomas: 12 catches, 211 yards, 1 TD
  • Davante Adams: 5 catches, 133 yards
Golladay has really gotten going since the Golden Taint trade, too, catching 19 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns in the past three games. Getting Aqib Talib back will definitely help limit the Lions’ passing game, but the Rams have to be aware of Golladay in the passing game.

He can line up outside, play the slot and run routes to every level of the field, which makes him a difficult player to cover. The Lions don’t have many weapons on offense, but Golladay is definitely someone they have to blanket in coverage.

RAMS AT LIONS
One area in which the Lions’ secondary has struggled is defending “switch releases,” which come when receivers align close together and run intersecting routes off the snap. The Rams align receivers tight and feature some sort of a switch release on almost every snap.

This is a minor concern but could lead to a slow start by the Rams. I'm more worried about this with the defense versus the offense and I don't want to see the Rams get in an early hole.

We do 51-7 performances off the bye in East coast games...no worries!

Not having Marvin Jones and Golden Taint is really problematic for them. Especially Jones- thier grizzled, dependable veteran.

Expecting alittle Blount here, a little Blount there, and a little Blount everywhere. The Lions have the tape on the Rams, but I'm sure Wade used this bye wisely. The Lions run vs Rams run defense is the intriguing matchup for me and I've got alot of confidence the Rams are ready to mitigate that attack and force the Lions to pass. Getting a fast start on offense and building a lead will help us dictate thier offensive as well.

I'm expecting a blowout here....but dont listen to me cause I expected Alabama to blow out Georgia yesterday and also bet on Pitt covering against Clemson.

Sportsbook- betting heavy on Rams passing game today. No bets at all on Gurley production, the Lions are stout here.

Dogs got me up early this am then they all went to sleep. I was like "really???"

Anyway Detroit is way too short in weapons offensively to hang with us. Course anything's possible in the NFL and with our CBs not named Talib but very unlikely this one is close and I expect a 2 TD win at least.

Also I expect Suh is going to have one of his "good" games on the nose today. They're going to get a tougher guy to wash out in the run game than they have seen on tape. Still expect them to run the ball of course but that ain't gonna save them.
