1. Jalen Hurts is overrated. I don't care that he's been an All-Pro, top MVP candidate, Pro Bowler and Super Bowl MVP. If I were starting a new team and you offered me the choice of a trade where I only had to take Hurts's tiny base salaries for 2027 and 2028 (in other words he'd cost the same as a rookie contract QB) or get Ty Simpson, I'm taking Simpson all day long, even though Simpson hasn't appeared in a single NFL regular season game. Hurts doesn't read the full progression. He creates some of his own pressure and will scramble out of clean pockets instead of throwing to open receivers. He's blind to wide open receivers, forcing the ball to covered receivers instead. He makes bad decisions, throwing ugly INTs. AJ Brown was right to want out. Hurts isn't a driving force for the Eagles; he's holding them back from being a better team. The media attention and praise that Hurts gets isn't warranted by his actual performance level as an individual player.
2. Their OL is down. For an extended number of years, about 15 years or so, the Eagles regularly have had one of the top OLs in the league. Their ability to rebuild their OL has been a key factor behind why different QBs have had so much success. Landon Dickerson tried to tough it out and play in Week 1 and he looked like the worst offensive lineman ever to play in a football game. Is his career over? I don't know what's going to happen to him down the road. The Eagles OL still has the 4th best pass block win rate in the NFL, per ESPN, but they aren't the intimidating force they've been in most years.
3. Their weapons are good. We're catching them at the right time, because they are beat up with injuries (we are too, but kind of cancels out) so have to see who can play in the game. DeVonta Smith didn't practice and it is a huge deal if he's out, because so much of their offense has been going through him. Don't relax if he can't go, because they have plenty of firepower. Elijah Moore, a former 2nd round pick, has only played 6 offensive snaps this year. That says something about the depth of talent. Darius Cooper is a 2025 UDFA from Tarleton State, who has 11 career NFL catches. Don't let that fool you. That guy can play. He had the game winning catch vs the Titans. Wicks is good. Barkley is playing through injury. Ertz is back. Mundt is still a factor, so don't bring bad karma on us by making fun of him this week.
4. Makai Lemon is a problem. So far this season, Lemon has only 7 catches for a measly 38 yards on 9 targets. This means the Rams made the right decision in drafting Simpson, right? Don't say that before the game. Let's win first, then you can trash talk. The tape doesn't match the stats. Lemon lines up all over the formation. He might be out wide, in the slot, in a tight split near the OL, in the backfield as a RB, going in motion. When they've thrown it to him on manufactured touches, the blocking has been terrible. Other plays, he's wide open and silly Hurts never looks at him. For whatever reason, the Eagles too often use him as a checkdown, where he's not running an actual route, and since Hurts doesn't know how to use his checkdowns properly, it is almost pointless to have him on the field, because the QB never reads that part of the progression. Lemon is explosive and relative to his tiny size he's surprisingly strong. He's a good player; he just has a QB who doesn't understand how to integrate him into the offense. If Smith's injury keeps him from playing, Lemon might suddenly have a bigger role in the gameplan.
5. Barkley can still play. This season, Barkley only has 174 rushing yards, partly due to his injury and because of the OL shuffling. If they can sort things out, he's due for a breakout game.
6. Could be low scoring. Baun, Ojomo, Campbell, Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis all were on the injury report. Even with injuries, their defense should be good, so it probably won't be easy to move the ball and score points. They are 4th per ESPN in run stop win rate. With both teams potentially missing their best WRs, the game could turn into a rock fight.
