When you think about the Los Angeles Rams defense, two words come to mind: Aaron Donald. Rightfully so. He’s the best in the game, and one of the most dominant forces in the NFL. But not enough is said about the Rams’ secondary this season, which has indeed been locking down receivers and eliminating big plays.

Through three weeks of play, the Rams are the only team in the NFL that has yet to give up an air yards completion of 20+ yards. Opposing QB’s have attempted to take the Rams deep five times and all five tries proved fruitless.

Now, they have given up pass plays of 20+, the longest of which goes to Cleveland Browns’ RB Nick Chubb (30 yards). Jarvis Landry, also on a catch-and-run, went for 27 last week. And New Orleans’ Saints WR Tre’Quan Smith had a 28 yard reception in Week 2. That’s it. The Carolina Panthers didn’t have a pass-catcher eclipse 20 yards in the season opener.

In total, for both run and pass plays, the Rams have allowed only five 20+ yard plays all year. That, again, is currently the best mark in the league.

On Thursday, Rams’ DC Wade Phillips was asked the longest pass play to a receiver (that being Tre’Quan Smith) being 28 yards. His response:

That’s too much
You have to love that guy. And love what the Rams’ defense is doing as a whole to start the year.

Eric Weddle isn't a liability in the Los Angeles Rams secondary, but he isn't the same ball hawk who logged 10 interceptions with the Baltimore Ravens across the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The 34-year-old adds a veteran presence to a battle-tested group and comes up with stops in the open field.

But Weddle's understudy, rookie second-rounder Taylor Rapp, can become so much more with a bigger role.

The Washington product filled in for Weddle (concussion) in the season opener and recorded seven tackles, three of which were solo. From there, he's continued to showcase his talent and capture the coaching staff's attention.

"In the blink of an eye, Rapp went from a package player to essentially a starter, and while the Rams knew they would need to rely on him, they suddenly needed to lean into Rapp much heavier than originally planned," Vincent Bonsignore of The Athletic wrote.

Rapp has played 62.69 percent of defensive snaps through three contests, but he's fourth on the team in total tackles (16) with two pass deflections. The Rams don't need to tie Weddle to the sideline for a majority of games, but no one could blame them for decreasing his snaps in favor of a young talent on the rise.

What the fuck kind of bullshit is this? Weddle is the reason why the secondary has been so good. We saw what happened when Christian came in after EW got hurt. Jesus man what the hell.

(n):censored:

One would think that Sports Writers must be lazy after putting together this article on Eric Weddle. Rookie Defender Taylor Rapp has been getting most all his defensive snaps logged in @ the Hybrid inside LB'er post for Wade's defense not in the secondary where Weddle roams.:palm:

Bench Weddle??????? this writer has no clue what's going on in our secondary.

Really encouraged about Rapp though - wow what a pick up, wtg Snead. But he's not ready to replace Weddle, only if he's injured.

Yeah, I'll pile on.

This writer must be a Niner/Seahawk deepstate operative, frightened of all of our winning, and the building of this dominant unit, SPEARHEADED BY THE ADDITION OF WEDDLE. As @majrleaged said, he is the glue that is holding this defense together.

While he is correct that Rapp is a great find, and has to be on the field, he is ignoring the three-safety packages that have all three of our all-pro safeties kicking ass at the same time.

As much as I like Rapp - and I do, this guy simply needs to stop writing. In the last two games, Weddle was on the field for 100% of the snaps. Rapp was on the field for 62 and 76% of the snaps.

Who does this genius think is going to come in if we were to bench Weddle? Christian? Hager? Just SHTOPP!!!

The big news here is the Rams aren't getting gashed for big plays like the past couple of years. That is in both the passing and running game. Weddle, JJ and Rapp have something to do with that. It's still early in the season but, the defense is communicating much better. That helps limit their mistakes in the secondary. Improved tackling also is a factor. Rams need to keep up the pass rush while protecting their gaps. Some big games coming up and the defense needs to keep up this level to help win games.

Let's not overlook Littleton here. The dude is flat out ballin'.

I'm going to predict that this will not be the case after the game against the Bucs. I think the Rams will get out to a lead and Tampa will have to throw to catch up. I expect sacks, turnovers, and a lot of empty passing yards for Winston, including plenty of deep attempts to Evans, Howard, Perriman, and Godwin (If he plays).

Rams win by 14, but give up a few deep passes finally.

WTF. Rapp and Weddle don't even play the same position. Rapp is more of a strong safety/Linebacker who replaces an inside linebacker (not Littleton) in certain packages.

The biggest benefactors from the great coverage plays of JJ III, Rapp, Peters, Talib and Weddle are Fowler, Michael Brockers, Littleton and Clay Matthews as well as AD.

When the QBs have no where to throw, the Rams DL are licking their chops to put the full hit on the QBs. The hit by Clay Matthews on Bridgewater against the Saints displayed how vicious that hit was because the WRs were all covered.

The upside of this secondary is crazy... They can cover wideouts 3 deep with the best of them. They can (finally) cover TEs thanks to their safety position overhaul this offseason. They can cover even the best passing game RBs (struggles game one but since just damn). And all three safeties are stellar tacklers.

As we go forward all we need is the front seven to keep raising the bar on the pressure.
