I think the ship may have sailed on Hunter.
I hope not. He has to be able to pick up blitzes and block to protect Stafford. He seems to have the rushing goods to be a contributor. I haven't read anything either way. He has an uphill climb with Williams and Corum producing at high levels. We can see how he runs during the preseason. He may have to pick up some blitzes. Let's see how he does.

Like a lot of it. I'd put Wesley Bailey on the practice squad unless he really impresses in preseason (in which case, I'd cut an O-lineman like Limmer) and put Ty Hamilton on the roster. because AD - if he comes back; I won't be satisfied until he crosses the T's and dots the I's on his contract - is likely only signed for a year, if that. Hamilton may be something or nothing at all, but I'd love to see him prove it, since we'd lack a D-lineman if AD retires after this year is done.

I'd also switch Rivers with Connors (I don't know how much special teams Rivers can play at a high level, both Connors and Hunter have far more potential and less expensive years, and Rivers, let's be honest, is just a guy. He's talented enough to make the NFL and that's a huge accomplishment in itself, but he's never impressed me, even in preseason, and he's older and has an UFA contract after this year. I'd rather take a chance on the younger and potentially more talented players than Rivers, in my honest opinion.), and swap Limmer with Dylan McMahon (as I don't trust Limmer's pass protection nearly as much as McMahon's at center. McMahon has to show what he has, but he's at least a center, and the Rams like him. Would still steal Willie Lampkin back from the Eagles and replace Limmer/McMahon in a New York heartbeat, if at all possible.).

Like I said, I think the ship has sailed on him being a major contributor on this team but I hope he could be a useful player.

As to Stetson, this is a guy the Rams have communicated to Robinson and Nate that they are crossing their fingers right now that he can possibly hold the fort for 2-4 games midseason if necessary.

That ship is in dry dock baby and you hope it never sees water.
We'll have to disagree on Hunter. IMO, there's a chance he could be a major contributor in year 3 or 4 of his contract if either KW or Corum has departed.

Temporarily holding down the fort is every team's hope for QB2. No team wants to see QB2 for more than a few games. I don't see why Bennett doesn't have a chance to be as good as any backup in the league.

I would rather see Hunter stay vs Rivers. Rivers is a classic JAG. No juice.
It bugs me seeing Rivers on the depth chart as well. But then again it's not like Hunter's shown a damn thing. We got a scrimmage tomorrow though, and then those preseason games, so maybe Hunter will finally step up.

In a way I wonder if Hunter just isn't McVay's type of back. All little and quick and passcatchy. Not that our other two are great in the pass game, but it seems like little flexible and quick fuckers are McVay's wheelhouse in the backfield.

Maybe...but that would be weird because they say that McVay is the one who pounded the table for Hunter. Or it could be a Tutu situation all over again.

It could also just be a coach learning as he goes. Tutu is a great example of putting more value in upside than ST impact. We could argue over where exactly he fell on the depth chart year to year during his tenure. Some years he was probably higher than those bottom spots where you want to ensure teams types reside. But I figure this is something that once McVay gets a feel for he will kill it as he does with everything else.

Nobody likes the Little River Band, with maybe the exception of McVay. Rivers can play special teams plus does well in pass protection, but all of us would love to see Hunter, Connors or my favorite Jordan "Turn On The" Waters beat him out. IMO, the issue with Hunter is special teams and pass protection.

RB Coach Ron Gould is notorious for his quote "You must block to carry the rock." I think Hunter lacks that ability plus Hunter does not play special teams, so you have to factor that in. However, Hunter offers the most explosive option at RB, so I concur with some who feel maybe they are keeping Hunter with the thought process that they will not be able to sign Blake Corum next year, but preseason should be fun because many on this board love the White Elephant in the room Dean Connors and I like Jordan Waters, so let the games begin.

Hunter is another example of this. If you're fighting for the RB3 role and are worthless on special teams, that should trump your speed and upside potential in year two. There is no reason an athlete like him cannot shine on teams. But if he doesn't feel like he needs to do that in order to win a roster spot, then some guys are not wired to develop that part of their game.

Whether he's a guy who never will be a good teams type, I have no idea. I haven't noted him on teams good or bad. But I also don't think Rivers is particularly great at teams. Maybe he's selfless and contributes and that's great, but it sure would be nice to have a RB bottom of the chart who provides impact.

Also I'm not saying that every bottom chart type should be an impact teamer. But the basic idea is at a few spots on the bottom of your roster a top team should have those core types who really shine and lead and inspire the others on those units. Rams have some solid teams types, it's not like they're completely oblivious of this or anything. But for fuck's sake it would be nice to someday find a returner with real threat, or gunners who can consistently lock down returners, or blocking on returns so that our returner doesn't have a wall of dudes standing in front of him even on shallow kicks.

Might be something to that. McVay ran Darrel Henderson out there for too long IMO. He was basically out of the NFL when the Rams cut him. Got cut from the CFL this year.

I do wonder if McVay drafts outside the box sometimes to challenge himself and see if he can add new layers to the scheme. And sometimes it just doesn't work out. He is getting better at mixing personnel but I get sticking to what you know.
