“Sept. 6 Teams can begin signing practice squad players at 1 p.m. ET”

NFL practice squad rules: Everything to know for 2020

The NFL made several changes this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has affected every aspect of the offseason. Among the most notable adjustments made by the NFL is the expansion of each team’s practice squad.

Rather than keeping the usual 10-player limit for each team, the league has expanded them to allow clubs to carry 16 practice squad players. Within each practice squad, teams will also be able to carry vested veterans – or players with four or more years of accrued seasons.

In order to help you better understand these changes, we’ve laid out everything you need to know about the practice squad this year.

Practice squad size

Teams will be able to carry up to 16 players on the practice squad for the 2020 season. That’s up from the previous limit of 10 players, which had been in effect from 2014 through 2019. Previously, it was limited to only eight players from 2004-2013.

That means including the 53 players on the active roster, teams will have a total of 69 players available to practice each week.

Eligibility

Up to six players will be eligible for the practice squad regardless of how many seasons they’ve accrued in the NFL. That’s not to say teams must carry six players with more than four seasons of accrued experience, but six is the limit.

Up to four players with no more than two accrued seasons will also be eligible for the practice squad. Again, that’s not a requirement, but a limit.

Most of the practice squad positions will be filled by players with no accrued experience, or players who have been active for fewer than nine NFL games.

Weekly promotion

Each week, teams will be able to promote up to two players to the active roster. Those players can be sent back down to the practice squad without having to clear waivers no more than twice.

So with that new rule, game-day rosters can technically be up to 55 players, allowing for more flexibility each week for teams across the NFL.

Protecting players

Teams can still sign players from other practice squads and put them on their 53-man roster, but each week, teams can protect up to four players from being signed by other teams. So if a team has a proven veteran on its practice squad, it can protect him from being signed by a team that would like to sign him.

Salaries

Regular practice squad players will make $8,400 per week, while veteran practice squad players will make $12,000. That’s up from $8,000 per week in 2019 and $7,600 in 2018.

Predicting which 16 players the Rams will try to stash on the practice squad

The Rams have finalized their initial 52-man roster, making their last cuts on Saturday before the 1 p.m. PT deadline. Now, the second phase of work begins.

They can add up to 16 players to their practice squad beginning on Sunday. In order for the Rams to add a player they cut to the practice squad, however, that player has to make it through waivers without being claimed by another team.

Here are the 16 players we predict the Rams will try to sign to their practice squad this weekend.

QB Bryce Perkins

Sean McVay specifically mentioned Perkins as a player the Rams want to try to get onto the practice squad, but it remains to be seen if he’ll make it through waivers. If he does, he’d be a great candidate to spend a year on the practice squad, or possibly be called up to the roster as a rookie if something happens to Jared Goff or John Wolford.

RB John Kelly

Kelly was surprisingly among the Rams’ first round of cuts on Friday, but he’s a good player for them to keep around. With Darrell Henderson’s status up in the air due to a hamstring injury, the Rams could use running back depth. Kelly could be a candidate to be promoted early in the season if Henderson can’t play.

WR Easop Winston Jr.

Winston had a chance to make the roster with as a reserve receiver, but their talent at the top of the depth chart limited the younger players’ opportunities. He’s a good young receiver to stash on the practice squad and develop, especially with Cooper Kupp and Josh Reynolds hitting free agency next year.

OL Cohl Cabral

Cabral would provide depth on the interior of the offensive line, particularly at center where Austin Blythe will be the starter. He was one of the top players left after the draft and according to reports, was having a decent camp. Like several other undrafted rookies, he’s a good developmental prospect on a suspect offensive line.

ILB Clay Johnston

Johnston had an uphill climb to making the 53-man roster because of the torn ACL he suffered in October, limiting him a bit this offseason. Seventh-round picks are never guaranteed roster spots, either, so Johnston still had to prove himself.

If he can take a redshirt year to learn and get his knee right, he could be a contributor next season at inside linebacker. He’s a better prospect than his seventh-round title would indicate.

ILB Daniel Bituli

Bituli is an old-school type of linebacker, carrying a big frame on the inside. The Rams are extremely thin at inside linebacker and could use some depth, and Bituli fits the mold of a true Mike linebacker. If Troy Reeder or Kenny Young don’t pan out early, Bituli might get a chance at some point to be called up.

CB Adonis Alexander

Alexander is a bigger cornerback who can also play safety, which is valuable position flexibility. The Rams don’t have a great deal of cornerback depth and injuries do happen, so having Alexander to develop on the practice squad would benefit Los Angeles.

CB Dont'e Deayon

Deayon’s personality alone was worth keeping around, in my opinion, and he does have potential on the field, too. Despite being on the smaller size, he’s scrappy and sticky in coverage. It’s important for the Rams to have depth at cornerback after keeping just four on the 53-man roster, which is why Deayon makes sense as a practice squad candidate.

DB Dayan Lake

Lake can play corner and safety, which like Alexander, provides value. The Rams were reportedly encouraged by what they saw from Lake, he just needs to gain experience in the NFL before truly getting a chance to see the field.

S JuJu Hughes

Hughes has good speed and size for the safety position, hailing from Fresno State. He’d benefit from spending time on the practice squad and learning from the likes of John Johnson and Taylor Rapp for a year.

OL Jamil Demby

Demby has had trouble sticking to a team in his brief career, and he’d benefit from spending some time on the practice squad. The Rams already have 10 offensive linemen on the active roster, so they might look at other positions, but Demby has some experience in this system.

DL Jonah Williams

You can never have too many defensive linemen on a roster, and Williams is someone with NFL potential. He was among the Rams’ final nine cuts, so that decision came down to the end for Los Angeles. He has good size at 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds.

DL Michael Hoecht

Like Williams, Hoecht was one of the Rams’ final cuts. He hails from Brown university and was a highly touted prospect in the CFL draft. He can be a versatile linemen in the NFL, playing either defensive end or defensive tackle.

OLB Natrez Patrick

Patrick was one of the more surprising cuts because he has the ability to play inside or outside linebacker. He went undrafted last year but made the Rams’ 53-man roster initially, and has the explosiveness teams like in linebackers.

ILB Christian Rozeboom

Rozeboom is also a player the Rams really liked, and he was one of the last cuts. It was somewhat surprising that they didn’t keep him as a fourth linebacker, but don’t be surprised if he ends up on an NFL roster this season – either the Rams’ or someone else’s after waiver claims Sunday.

WR Earnest Edwards

Wide receiver may be a position of strength, but developing young wideouts with Kupp and Reynolds slated to hit free agency is never a bad idea. Edwards was a favorite among draftniks leading up to the draft, and it was somewhat surprising that he wasn’t selected. He may not make it through waivers, though.

I'm fairly confident they'll sign Lirim and/or McGuinness
Wonder if they would have 2 QB and bring that Love kid back? He got cut so early though, really not a good look

Should a full season be played, we may see a lot more Practice Squad players getting signed to other teams 53-man rosters.

Three reasons ... 16 players on PS, two of them can be designated game-day-active (I believe) so there could be game tape on them and COVID cases which could lead to far more roster maneuvers.

Take it for what it's worth. In McVay's last press video he stated that the plan was to not sign an extra kicker to the PS.

I thought they'd grab a 2nd kicker, although with the new PS rules they could try to get someone with NFL kicking experience.

As much as it might feel good to have Lirim or McGinnis on the practice squad, I wouldn’t do it either.
  1. Having one haunting over Sloman’s shoulder is not ideal
  2. You made your pick. Show some balls you got it right. Don’t NEED 2 kickers.

How do you clear waivers “but for now”?!? It’s either or.
I think she meant to say (possibly) that but for now he will resign with rams PS. That’s the only thing that makes sense. Journalism in 2020 I guess.

If a team picks him up they have to put him on their active roster IIRC. He can still be claimed in the future.

I agree, if Sloman does not kick well, there will be plenty of others to bring in just as quick.

Well can't blame the kid, he's feels more comfortable with that staff...Keep in mind the Rams could always sign him to the active roster and if the Panthers want to keep him, they would have to add them to theirs.
Yeah totally get it. His coaches and even father are in Carolina, makes sense almost wonder why they didn't just get him as an UDFA.
