In the 8 games in which Talib played the Rams allowed 15.4 ppg.

In 8 games without Talib the Rams
allowed 30.7 ppg.

15.4 ppg would be #1 in the NFL.The Bears #1 defense allowed 17.7 ppg

With Talib:
Raiders 13
Cardinals 0
Chargers 23
Lions 16
Bears 15
Eagles 30
Cardinals 9
*49ers 17 (Talib and starters left game with 08:00 left in 4th quarter with Rams up 48-17 before Niners scored two junk time TD’s on Rams backups)

Offenses faced without Talib:
Vikings
Seattle
Broncos
Niners
Packers
Saints
Seahawks
Chiefs

Admittedly, the offenses faced without Talib were much better, but the Rams
offense also turned the ball over in Rams
territory a lot in a three game stretch in which Talib played, the defense overcame these turnovers time
after time by stiffening and stopping the opposing offense.

Talib in the passing game has made numerous plays but he has also been lights out vs the run, which explains the Rams defense Elite Numbers with Talib.

PPF reported that Talib and Johnson each ended the season with a 51 straight tackles or assists streak without missing the tackle, which is tops in the NFL among defensive backs.

It does give me hope, but small sample size and quality of opponents make the Rams defense a true unknown.

But we have a chance. Here's hoping these guys ball the F out and get 'er done.

I don’t care what it takes, but if IF we can just control the opposing teams’ run game we have a chance!

So Talib should be the defensive MVP on the team?

I posted it before when he was injured. But Talib has the experience and leadership to settle the secondary down and keep the defensive unit focused. I agree that the opponents have been "less" but it was after he went down in the San Diego game that our defense "got exposed".

Fowler was an upgrade over Longacre so we have enough to win it all if the offense gets back to balling out again.

I think this defense just might be built for the playoffs... meaning, big stage guys now have their stage.

Time to bring it.

Interesting topic @TexasRam

I just rewatched the Eagles game in which we gave up 30 with Talib.

We gave them the ball in our territory:

1 With the 3rd and 1 play in which Sullivan stepped on Goff’s foot and took
him to the ground in which Goff got
up and tried to throw while being sacked resulting in an interception. Leading to a TD.

2 Fake punt that failed leading to another score.

3 Blown coverage leaving Jeffrey and Angolor wide open past our safeties.

Lots of flukes and correctable things.

Our defensive weakness:

1 Littleton and Barron size can’t hold up in run defense.

2 Ebukam run defense on the edge.

3 Peters lack of Effort to come up and make a tackle in the run game

4 Wade’s Refusal to dial up the Blitz and force some rushed throws.

I have 4 Solutions:

1 Bring in bigger LBers on running downs and around the Goaline.

2 Get Ebukam off the field unless it’s against a heavy pass team.

3 Get Peters in a 1 on 1 and challenge his manhood to start tackling. Show him film of how Johnson tackles.

4 Dial up some 6 man heavy blitzes and coach your CB’s how to man up and slow WRs down.

.

rams points differential with talib on the field - 102 in 8 games (raiders, cards x 2, chargers, lions, bears, eagles, whiners)

rams points differential without talib on the field - 41 in 8 games (vikings, seafucks x 2, broncos, whiners, packers, saints, chiefs)

losses with talib on the field - 2

losses without talib on the field - 1

points scored by offense with talib on the field - 240

points scored by offense without talib on the field - 287

what does all this prove? the rams were under the pump to score when talib was out. but then, they were playing much better teams.

5 blowout victories with talib and only 1 without talib. but then the only gimme game during that stretch was the whiners, who they blew out. so the rams blew out teams they were supposed to with or without talib.

i guess all these numbers don't really show much except the defense is much better with talib out on the field (except for that one horrible quarter against the eagles)

.

He is still a stud out there and the obvious leader of the backfield. I'm glad he's back next year because we need him. It's been discussed before but I would love to see him stay here more than another year but transition to safety for a few years a la Aeneas. Maybe one more at CB next season then try him at safety if we haven't found a good one by then. The guy is respected and makes everyone around him better.

Defense just needs to show up and stay focused.

When the Rams go ahead by 14 or more, the whole game looks different.... everything clicks.

But, they need to stay focused during the playoffs... these teams can (and will) come roaring back.

If they get a nice cushion, KEEP IT!!

1 Littleton and Barron size can’t hold up in run defense.

Yes this has been our biggest problem for two seasons now.

Of course if you re-watch the whiners game you'll see Littleton played pretty well, as even when he didn't make the play he filled his gap aggressively by stuffing the FB. He has come a long way in decisively filling his gap on run action, and is on his way to being "that guy" who Wade works magic with like he usually has in previous stops.

Barron is the glaring problem with our run defense, this particular scheme it's going to kill you having one dude who cannot be counted on to do his job. In the first half vs the whiners there was ONE play where he overran the action and it resulted in a huge gainer. Outside of that our run defense was damn good. Didn't rewatch the second half, however I do feel like the Rams have been working hard on the run stoppage.

Don't want to gloss over some good things Barron did in that game. However in that role the most important thing is the consistency and that's where he comes up short.

I agree that utilizing your high draft capital assets on CB's is a proven win win.;)(y)

One weakness for every team in NFL playoffs
ByJordan Dajani
Los Angeles Rams: inside linebackers

No team in the NFL gave up more yards per carry (5.1) than the Rams. And that’s with defensive tackles Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh. Inside linebackers Mark Barron and Corey Littleton too often have failed to diagnose plays quick enough and their delayed reactions have yielded yards up the middle. The 147 rushing plays up the middle that L.A.’s defense faced – fifth-most in the NFL – produced an average gain of 4.27 yards, 21st in the league for that direction.

This is the Rams defensive Achilles Heel. Our opponents can game plan us in less than a few seconds & Run the ball on offense.

Opponents just need to run through the hole that our pass rushing DL always creates on run downs??? There is a high chance that Barron/Littleton will not react fast enough to fill that hole. It's not occurred much this season. Wade has yet to fix this.

If these 2 ILB'ers just happen to get lucky & end up in that hole ... don't try to evade them just run through their nonwrap tackles that come with a lightweight & zero hit intensity.

A defensive game plan is to ignore the run & just go into fulltime molestation of Goff up the middle of our OL. McVay will still go heavy with his passing offense over the running the ball. Hitting Goff will guarantee your team several fumbles & interceptions.

Is Kiser really not ready to be given a shot on early downs? Could he be worse at stopping the run in the middle then Barron?

Marcus Peters also played much better when Talib came back .Saints game could've been way different with him.

If the Rams stay in the 43 defense next year, I truly believe they need to replace both ILBs. That means Littleton would go to OLB and Barron is likely gone. Let me state I loves Littleton motor and the Rams need to find a starting position for him. Also I love Barrons athleticism but there doesn’t seem to be an appropriate starting position for him. He is a former safety but the Rams are not seeing him in that role and he makes way too much $$$ for a safety. Thoughts??

I see the season and sample size from my big screen and I don't sugar coat or look through rose colored fans glasses.

The Rams have had their asses kicked late in the season and for good logical reasons are considered an overrated 13-3 team with obvious flaws.

I know you don't play the homer card and you tell it like you see it etc...

I just don't see it the way many others have based based on the chinks in their armor shown from the New Orleans, Chicago and the brutal loss at home vs the Eagles.

Sure there have been other hints vs Green Bay along with other games earlier in the season.

This has been a flawed 13-3 Rams team for various reasons but in my eyes, they are and have been the best team in the NFL from opening day.

We are going to find out soon just how good this team really is in 9 days.
