Not all the factors that will determine Simpson's success are within his hands. The Rams as an organization must succeed around him and continue to provide a strong support structure. The team is very strong right now, but things can change quickly in the NFL. We don't know how things might look like 5 years down the road. Just look at what happened to the Chiefs last year. Even Mahomes can't single handedly fix every problem by himself.

To be successful, Simpson has to do his part. But the Rams also have to keep up their half of the bargain.

I don't disagree with that at all. Any QB put in a shitty situation will most definitely suffer. There is definitely a reason football is a team game. Best recent example is Stafford when he went from the Lions to us.

He AND his team mates played worse in the postseason. Got down early to Georgia and couldn't fight back. Of course that was the 2nd time they faced him so a well coached team like Georgia is going to make adjustments. Simpson seemingly made adjustments facing Oklahoma for the second time winning that one. They lost to Indiana, where NOBODY on Alabama looked good. And IIRC, Indiana didn't lose a game all year, looked like the better team in every game they played.

So I'll give him a pass for "playing like shit", as you say. First season under center, great regular season, bad post season. Sort of what one might expect from a talented (first round?) rookie QB in the NFL. But that wasn't the NFL. Nobody knows how he's going to pan out there so we're going to have to wait. Which means, those down on him can spend all that time talking shit about him and those who like him can spend all that time talking him up, without being wrong. Doesn't mean a fucking thing.

Compared to how he started out, he played like shit imo. I'm not totally knocking him for that because being that it was his first year as a starter, a slump is honestly expected aka growing pains. However he obviously showed enough for the Rams to take a chance. I simply responded to a poster as to why he wasn't going #1 overall to an obvious homer post saying he'd been number 1 without his injuries. I totally agree that we have zero clue how Simpson will turn out and mentioned earlier in this topic that the convo is basically a round and round discussion because of that.

I agree with you. He messed up sometimes but that's to be expected from a 1-year starter. Yes, he might have good football IQ but on the field it doesn't always show.

I'm watching the Tennessee game, because I'm studying a different player. Bama is leading by 10 points late in the 4th quarter. They have a short 3rd down on the 11 yard-line of the opponent and call a play-action bootleg pass. This is supposed to be a very safe and conservative call. If the D bites on the run, there should be someone wide open for the TD. If the edge is open, the QB could try to run to the marker or just dump it off to the flat route guy. If nothing is there, the QB will be close to the sideline and can just throw it away out of bounds. The coach should be able to trust his QB on this play. It is nearly impossible to mess up. You are up by 2 scores. If you don't get a TD, just take the FG. Odds are the Vols can't comeback anyway. The one thing you absolutely cannot do in this situation is give them a defensive TD. Any QB must know this given the score, field position, clock, overall game situation.

As Simpson bootlegs, he has a defender in a bind, unsure whether to drop deeper to take away the corner route or jump forward to cover the flat. Simpson doesn't exploit this and stay with the short route WR, he's impatient and looks away too quickly, just as that WR is about to pop wide open for an easy conversion. The QB probably also could have just run to the sideline for the 1st down. Instead, he stops, looks back towards the middle of the field and tries to jam it between 2 defenders to the late route TE, near the LOS. The pass gets tipped up into the air and is nearly intercepted. Lucky it didn't become a pick 6.

What a horrible play. Still, should we expect different? The kid hasn't started much; he's just trying to make something happen. You can learn from those types of mistakes. It isn't like Stafford in the NFL has been perfect and never done anything silly himself.

There are aspects to Simpson's tape where he's really good and makes outstanding plays. I understand why the Rams like him. On the other hand, we shouldn't gloss over and ignore the bad parts and the inconsistency. He has plenty of room to improve. I think that predicting greatness is putting the cart before the horse.
