Projecting Rams' compensatory picks

PHOENIX -- One order of business at this week's NFL owners meetings has nothing to do with rule changes and alterations or potential relocation to Los Angeles.

On Monday night, the league is expected to hand out its 32 compensatory choices for the 2015 NFL draft. Those choices will be spread out over the draft's final four rounds with the best pick a team can receive coming at the end of the third round.

The St. Louis Rams currently have five picks in this year's draft with a selection in the first, second, third, fourth and seventh round. But that number is expected to grow this week.

The question is how much will it grow?

Compensatory picks are handed out on the basis of a complicated formula that has never really been revealed in detail. That makes projecting these choices a difficult proposition but it is expected that the Rams will get some more picks.

The folks at overthecap.com have put together their best guesses for the past few years and offer at least a reasonable outline of what teams will receive. Here's the link to all of their projections.

For the Rams, overthecap.com projects that they'll receive one extra pick, a sixth-round choice, in exchange for the loss of guard Chris Williams to Buffalo in last year's free agency.

Teams get picks based on free-agent losses and gains. It's possible the Rams could get another selection but they probably won't get more than two. As a guide, here's a look at what the Rams gained and lost in last year's free agency. Remember, players like cornerback Cortland Finnegan (lost) and guard Davin Joseph (added) who were released do not count in the formula.

Lost: Williams, QB Kellen Clemens, G Shelley Smith, S Darian Stewart

Gained: QB Shaun Hill, DT Alex Carrington, WR Kenny Britt

It wouldn't come as a huge surprise if the Rams didn't get any additional picks through the compensatory system but the guess here is they come out with one or two in the final rounds.
