These rankings were made by the Athletic.

We’re coming in at 11, with top 6 tackles and a subpar interior.

Thoughts?

The Bengals, who were arguably the worst pass blocking team in years, are now No. 10 (above the Rams) because they added Alex Cappa, Ted Karras and La'el Collins?

Please. :eyeroll:

How do they know that the Rams guards will be below average? Edmunds has had one good year, followed by one not so good year. So he’s hard to project. And Bruss or whomever starts at OLG hasn’t had any years.

Do you mean Edwards?

I must be slipping because I was of the opinion that the Rams center post was well covered & was in excellent condition with Brian Allen & Coleman Shelton both there to play the post. That center rating is near JAG territory.

How the 9ers with an interior OL can be rated so high & better than the Rams makes this article suspect.

The 9ers have a wore down 37 yr old center Alex Mack who might still yet retire. So that super high rating is a big question. Throw in the fact the 9ers lost their best interior all-pro OG Laken Tomlinson in FA'cy. The 9ers have given his post to a green OG who was only healthy for 5 snaps in 2021 named Aaron Banks & never started an NFL game. The other starting OG is Daniel Brunskill whose name might be recognized by the times we saw Aaron Donald run over his backside on the highlight reels last season. The OG rating is way over the top plus the 9ers lost their best swing reserve OG in FA'cy too.
"There may not be a bigger question mark on the 49ers’ roster than their offensive line."

I'd naturally think there would be a slight dip with Whit retiring on the tackle side. As far as the middle of our o-line, the drop where Corbett was is probably being assumed because there will be a new starter there, possibly Bruss. All in all tho, fuck those rankings because players can improve as well as scheme so no way to tell how our o-line will do.

They really like Alex Mack. Maybe they're assuming he'll compensate for his surrounding guards lol

Feels about right, to be honest.
Rookie starter and undersized center and a left guard who was good, not great. Key here will be Bruss and how quickly he gets onboard. The good news is that he looks like an ideal candidate going into an ideal situation.

To be fair that is a complete overhaul of the offensive line. I've no idea how it will work out but the expectation might not be as crasy as you think.

It's not nearly that crazy, imo, when you look at the talent they have in house now.

I know that David Edwards was not the best all-around OL'er who started for this Ram team in 2021 but he is far from being in need of replacement. His issues have been most attached to his run blocking however his pass blocking has been very good for an OG.

Being over 6-6 inches tall (like Edwards) has always been an issue for OL'ers who are asked to perform the OG position in the NFL in run blocking. I know of no reason why Edwards would not work hard & make every attempt to be a better run blocker from that LG post this upcoming season. Edwards has been a pleasant surprise since being drafted here in the 5th rd pick of 2019.

The situation with his starting playmate LT Joseph Noteboom is very close to what Edwards's issues are. Both are far superior @ pass blocking. So this is sure to get the attention of OL Coach Carberry going into the 2022 OTA Offseason Workouts May 23-24, May 26, May 31-June 2 & Mandatory Minicamp June 7-9.

I do have concerns & have voiced these concerns here in ROD with the run blocking strength going into 2022 due to the pathetic 2021 display. But I also understand there were other elements outside the OL that occurred that caused what we saw in 2021 in the run game.

Summary: I fully expect this OL to be better in its run blocking this season. I believe that Edwards will help in powering this problem up. You could see it in McVay's face over & over when his run game failed him in 2021.

Well with Burrow at QB any improvement in pass pro will be felt.

That said I think the premise of ranking OL protections as a projection is a bit nuts. Because so much of pass pro is coordination among that five and handling stunts and shit.

And that's where the score they give Allen is probably too low. His ability to communicate isn't factored in enough.

Second note.. it'd be nice to be better in run blocking.. but pass pro is king and it's not close for me.

Expecting improvement: not crazy.

Expecting a jump to Top 10: kinda crazy.

Not even a little crazy.
All three are excellent players. Kappa and Karras would both probably start ahead of any of the Rams guards and Collins and Havenstein graded out almost even.

Our Rams are adding two new starters.. one is a rookie.

All seems absolutely sensible to me.

Run blocking is a big concern. I can’t believe that Edwards will improve his run blocking playing alongside a less efficient run blocker than what Whitworth was. The Saffold/Edwards combo is a bit of a concern imo.
