Pierre Garcon could consider Rams in free agency

The Rams could be one of several teams vying for Garcon's services in the free agent market.

The Los Angeles Rams are expected to be one of the busier teams in the league this offseason in terms of shaping their roster ahead of next year.

Among these potential shifts could be in their efforts in acquiring additional help at the wide receiver position. According to The Washington Post’s Mike Jones, Los Angeles is already believed to be one of a handful of teams interested in veteran wideout Pierre Garcon, who is expected to become a free agent next month.

The team likes Pierre Garcon, and Garcon says he wants to be here. But as many as five other teams (Rams, Eagles, Bears, Cowboys, 49ers) are expected to want this reliable veteran to serve as a security blanket for their young quarterbacks.

If any of those come correct (financially), and the Redskins do the Redskins thing and lowball their own rather than giving them the respect they deserve, Garcon will likely shrug and go elsewhere.

Garcon is coming off a productive campaign that saw him lead the Washington Redskins in receptions (79) and receiving yards (1,041). It was his second 1,000 receiving yard campaign of his career, which have both come with the Redskins. He has been in Washington since the 2012 season where he signed a five-year, $42.5 million deal.

The 30-year-old has stepped up as one of the primary receiving options for Kirk Cousinsover the last few seasons notching at least 68 receptions in each of the past fours years overall. Although Garcon has voiced his desire to remain with the organization, he could choose to sign elsewhere if he feels he is undervalued in contract offers from Washington, who will possess more than $60 million in salary cap space this offseason.

Meanwhile, the Rams have a pressing need to find more viable options in their receiving corp, which has failed to produce a legitimate No.1 option in the last several seasons. Despite Kenny Britt notching career-best numbers in 2016, he hasn't truly latched onto being considered a player that can fulfill the qualities that come with the territory.

Beyond Britt, the Rams didn't have a receiver surpass 600 receiving yards or 60 catches. In fact, they had just three players record at least 50 or more receptions while combining for just 14 total touchdowns as a unit in the season.

Los Angeles' pursuit of Garcon could ultimately hinge on how the market shapes up in regards to price range. Alshon Jeffery is expected to draw plenty of attention as the top receiver available and things could heat up for the rest of the field once he makes his decision.

The Rams will have just over $40 million in salary cap space at their disposal during the offseason.

Seems we would have an edge in signing Garcon.

30 yrs old, very productive,Very good hands.(1 dropped pass in 2016 and 1 in 2015)
A dependable WR wearing Horns? I say go get him.Knows system, would be a very nice bridge until younger WR'S are developed

I agree. I'd love to have Garcon if Jeffery wasn't available and/or we re-sign Tru.

I think Garcon and Stills is a great combo cap wise and skill wise.

Well, a Wide Receiver that can actually catch the football? What a novel concept!

I'm like he'll get like 8.3 mill a year.

Mike Thomas? I'm surprised anyone is still confident about him after what he showed last season.

I think he is going to cost to much ?? I'm not sure about his age & health ?

I doubt he gets a huge pay day. He's basically been pretty average with only 2 thousand yard seasons. He's a good route runner, knows the playbook, etc which is why we need him. He's not gonna come in here and destroy worlds

He had 1 really bad drop. Just as bad as the Kenny Stills drop. Thomas has shown route running and an ability to get open. That was an issue of his coming out of college. I'm not going to write a guy off for 1 huge drop in his rookie season. It's not impossible or hard to improve catching ability, it's probably harder to learn how to get open.

It's all about the cap, relations, & evaluations. I trust this coaching staff to help puzzle The Rams organization back together.
Finding the pieces to the puzzle I find interesting.Demoff & McVay are looking for 2 players instead of one.
I'm excited to see how they trim the fat
This season.Last season I would have stuck with Foles & draft picks. Case was the starter & Mannion still needed to be looked at for future.
Jared Cook & Long both shined in the playoffs & were team leaders. Did The Rams even use there salary cap ?
I like the rebuild though & was worth the losing just to get Fisher out. Couldn't imagine another 2 years. Let alone if they would have had him finish the season. I would have loved all the drama & cat calls though. He would have deserved every bit of it.

There are a lot of decisions to be made & Center is a key spot if nothing else but depth. Then maybe a offensive lineman that adds veteran leadership.
--!! Wonder if Saffold gets cut for salary ?? Not sure he brings value & takes a shot at Goff. Jared Cook with Foles helped him with walking papers.

---Lance Kendrick ??? I think the surprise position in Free agency is TE. McVay said TE before WR so I think he has a couple players in mind. Higbee & Hemmingway are still very raw.
Turn on the tape & Lance Kendricks drops to many balls & has way to many mental mistakes.

I found this great feature on sportrac.

It gives their estimate of free agent contracts values. They missed Kenny Stills. We may not agree on all of them but, it's a interesting look at the numbers. I always try to guess what FA contract will be for players that we think would fit the Rams. Surprisingly, Garcon is higher than Jackson @ 8.7 Million to 7.6 Million per year. Here is a link to the WRs where you click market value at the end of each player. I made a math error and change my number to 36 Million for 4 years with a cheap escape after 3 years. Click away it is very cool!

Im not sure how much of an upgrade he is over Britt. Ppl forget how good of a season Britt had last year given how awful our offense was. I think of Britt played in WAS last year he puts up 80 catches and about 1200-1300 yards.

Maybe it was an unforeseeable issue ie. Attitude. Garcon doesn't come off as a football player with attitude issues. So if that was really the case, Garcon is indeed an upgrade.

Garcon is going to be 31 before the season starts. Is that really what the Rams need? A guy entering the twilight of his career who generally can be expected to put up 70 catches for 750 yards and 4-5 TDs?

I mean, he could be a decent complementary guy and all, maybe a good locker room presence, but he strikes me as an older, slightly better version of Britt, production-wise.

I really think you'd be better suited chasing a younger guy like Robert Woods, or Kendall Wright, along with rolling the dice on a real game-breaker like Josh Gordon. If the Rams come away from FA with Woods and Gordon, I do think you'll see the middle of the field open up a lot for Gurley runs and Austin attacking the slot.
