Philip Rivers 'permanently' moves out of San Diego, signaling possible split with Chargers

Philip Rivers has moved "permanently" from San Diego to Florida to be closer to his family, the free-agent quarterback texted to ESPN on Sunday morning.

"What this means football-wise is to be determined but it was time for us to move back closer to home," Rivers said in the text message.

While his family settles in in the South, Rivers' football future is unsettled. He is a free agent this offseason, and it appears that he and the Los Angeles Chargersare going their own directions.

Rivers' contract is up, and he will be one of the top quarterbacks in a market that also could include Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Ryan Tannehill, Teddy Bridgewater, Jameis Winstonand Marcus Mariota, among others.

The Chargers have Tyrod Taylorunder contract for next season and have been impressed with his play throughout the past season, and he could wind up as Los Angeles' starting quarterback.

Rivers did not speak to reporters on Dec. 30 when he cleaned out his locker. He tearfully said after the Chargers' final game of the season that he wanted to continue playing but acknowledged it might not be with the Chargers.

"I plan to play football, so yes," Rivers said on Dec. 29. "Where that is going to be will get sorted out over the next few months. I've never been in this position. ... I'm very thankful for the 16 years, and if there is another, I'll be thankful for that."

Rivers, 38, passed for 4,615 yards and 23 touchdowns -- his fewest since 2007 -- with 20 interceptions this season, his 16th with the Chargers. The eight-time Pro Bowler is sixth in NFL history in both career passing yards (59,271) and touchdown passes (397).

Please sign him! Or when he retire so he can mentor Goff. Goff deserve a mentor like what Mahomes and Jimmy G got.

Probably a good move for both the Chargers and Rivers. The Chargers need a fresh start in L.A. if they want to grow that fanbase, and Rivers has said a few times he didn't want to be in L.A..

Re-sign Hunter Henry and let Rivers & Gordon go. They have all their high draft picks, time to re-load.

He will sign one of the following Teams:

  1. Indianapolis Colts....Better option then Jacoby Brissett and a great offensive line in front of him.
  2. Chicago Bears....They are committed to Mitchell Trubisky until they're not, besides maybe Mitchell learns a thing to two, like going back to Mitch.
  3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers....Western Florida is the best and Winston is not as good as Quarterbacks should.

Wonder if Rivers still has it as a starter at this point, the 2004 QB draft class was great but Eli was benched, Roethlisberger got injured, and Rivers looked abysmal this season.

Landing Spots for Rivers?

Yesterday we heard word that Philip Rivers was moving his family from the San Diego area to Florida, another indication he’s headed for a split with the Chargers. Rivers has said he isn’t retiring, so he’ll be suiting up somewhere next season even if he isn’t in Los Angeles.

There has been some speculation that Rivers could end up with the Colts, as he used to play under Indy head coach Frank Reich with the Chargers. There are a number of teams that could be interested in a veteran quarterback this offseason though, including the Buccaneers if they opt not to retain Jameis Winston. To that end, Jason La Canfora tweets that he’s “hearing a lot of buzz” about Tampa as a potential landing spot for Rivers.

La Canfora was one of the first to report back in November that a divorce from the Chargers might be in the cards. If Rivers does end up signing with the Bucs, he’ll be paired with the most accomplished offensive coach of his career in Bruce Arians. When Arians was with the Cardinals he brought in an aging Carson Palmer and rejuvenated his career, so there’s an obvious parallel there.

Rivers had a down 2019 due to a lot of turnovers, but the Chargers’ passing game was still very efficient yardage-wise, and in 2018 he was one of the best passers in the league. He led the Chargers to a 12-4 record that year while tossing 32 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions, averaging a robust 8.5 yards per attempt. Of course, all of this is predicated on the Bucs moving on from Winston, which is still very much up in the air.

It’s been hard to get a read on how they feel about Winston, and the last we heard was that members of the front office were split on bringing him back and that there hadn’t been any contract discussions between the two sides. With all of the high-profile signal-callers set to become free agents, this is shaping up to be the most interesting quarterback carousel in years.

He has two great jobs to choose from. Indy and Tampa both have excellent minds running the show who will take far better care of him than San Diego ever did.

But his family of 50 kids is going to be in Florida. He's tired of the commute and missing his family. So there's only one real job for him IMO and it's Tampa. He'll be a Buccaneer next season.

And btw the Bucs will be fantastic with him as signal caller. NFC gets tougher.

I think Rivers should retire. I dont think he can throw the ball further than 40 yards. It might be time to hang the noodle arm up

Didn't really watch any of his games this year that I can recall. If his arm has weakened though Arians won't want anything to do with him so yeah you may be right.

Report: Chargers have ‘moved on’ from Philip Rivers

It appears that Philip Rivers’ time with the Chargers organization is coming to an end.

In an appearance on “The Herd” on Monday, FOX Sports reporter Jay Glazer said that the Los Angeles Chargers have “moved on” from Rivers and will be looking for a new quarterback.

If true, Rivers will have to plot his next move. He has made it very clear that he intends to keep playing, even if not with the Chargers. He will likely receive interest, perhaps from an NFC team with an unsettled quarterback situation.

Rivers turned 38 in December. He’s coming off a season that saw him throw for 4,615 yards and 23 touchdowns, but also 20 interceptions.

As for the Chargers, they could be willing to make a huge splash if some other things develop favorably in the market. Their situation will certainly bear watching.
