I go to an NFC West site that is about as brutal as you can imagine for Rams fans. It is populated by mostly 49er and Hawk fans...There are about 7 Cardinal fans and 4-5 Rams fans (including me). I would point you towards it if you want, but it's a place where trolls do battle, as best that I can describe it.
Anyways....
I am excited about Jared Goff, and have been defending him over there. Niner fans were sure that they would draft him (several Cal fans). When we passed them like a bum on the street (Draft Board), the troll was "You mortgaged your future for a spread QB". or.."He needs to sit for 9 games at least, but you guys will get impatient and start him too soon and will ruin him". and, "Jared Goff wouldn't have even been a 1st round QB the year before, YOU OVERPAID" The worst slam they can think of, is calling him the next Sam Bradford.....
So what do you think? From my perspective:
1. Goff, unlike Bradford, never had his situation at Cal in a perfect way. Bradford was good with a great Oklahoma team around him, or with a Red Jersey on...He won the OROY with a very short passing game, before he got Bulgerized, but seemed to never see beyond his 2nd option. Goff would stand in the pocket at Cal and throw a strike, with a horrific Oline trying to protect him. He, like Bradford, has a wicked fast release.
2. Goff was the best QB available, but did we reach? I don't think so, but don't know for sure.
3. Can Goff learn the Pro Style system under center? Looks like he can, but the haters crow (and latch onto) reports that Goff is a work in progress (John Clayton and other LA reporters). This is where the haters say that Fisher will throw Goff into the fire and ruin him. Will Fisher feel the pressure in LA to have a winning record, so that he will not get fired?
4. Did we give up too much for Goff? Maybe....But we have been in a nasty cycle of being mediocre. Good enough to never get a great rookie QB in the draft, with no franchise QB's available in Free Agency (not too old, or injured). We had to roll the dice, imho.
I hope that Goff will develop quickly, so this is not another lost season. The tough skinny kid at Call that I saw on tape, didn't have it easy, and he made that horrific team (as a freshman), into a respectable team last year...almost by himself. So am I a slackjawed homer?
