So Disappointing The Firing of George Allen in 1978.
They interviewed the likes of Bill Walsh & Dan Reeves, in fact, both Carroll Rosenbloom's son (Steve) and GM Don Klosterman were making a case for Reeves because he was a Dallas assistant and Walsh was still under contract with Stanford and when it came to that type of stuff, CR was somewhat tightfisted. Don Coryell was also an option, but CR went with Allen because he felt Allen could get the Rams to a Super Bowl even though Allen's post season record was worst than Knox's.
Pat Haden was one of the main culprits as he wanted Malavasi because now under Allen, Malavasi was the OC. I understand the players were upset and there was a revolt and all of that, but to think what the Rams could have had and ended up with Sloppy Ray was very disappointing. I will give Malavasi credit for 1979 and that defense that sent Staubach into retirement, but I feel confident if it had been Walsh or Coryell (with Ray running the defense) might have been a better story. Not so sure on Reeves, who after doing some more research was actually plan B if they did not go with Allen.
