One possibility to replace Blake as linebackers coach, and possibly even to step in as defensive coordinator, is Clancy Pendergast. Pendergast, 45, was defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals from 2004-08, then spent a year as Kansas City’s coordinator, before spending the past three seasons with the same job at the University of California-Berkeley.
He spent a year on Fisher’s Houston Oilers staff in 1995, and knows Rams assistant head coach Dave McGinnis, although they have never worked together in the NFL. As a coordinator, Pendergast’s defenses are best known for their ability to create turnovers. During his five years with Arizona, the Cardinals ranked eighth in the NFL in takeaways.
At Cal, the Golden Bears led the Pacific-10 Conference in total defense and passing defense in 2010 and 2011. With longtime Cal head coach Jeff Tedford fired after the 2012 season, Pendergast is looking to get back into the NFL according to league sources, either as a position coach or coordinator.
