Reports: Chip Kelly to be fired by 49ers

For the second straight year, the 49ers are expected to fire a coach after only one year on the job.

Per multiple reports, from ESPN and NFL Network, coach Chip Kelly is expected to be fired. He was hired a year ago, after being fired by the Eagles with one game left in the season.

A 49ers spokesman declined comment regarding the report.

ESPN and NFLN also report that the 49ers are expected to fire G.M. Trent Baalke. That move has previously been reported multiple times in multiple places.

If Baalke is out, it makes sense to fire Kelly, too. Forcing a new G.M. to keep a coach he wouldn’t have hired makes a dysfunctional situation even worse. The new G.M. should be able to hire his own coach.

Two years ago, the 49ers ended the season and promptly announced a “mutual parting” with coach Jim Harbaugh. Then-defensive line coach Jim Tomsula widely was expected to get the job, and he did. After a 5-11 season, Tomsula was fired.

The 49ers hired Kelly, who had emerged as a surprise candidate for the job. A season-opening win over the Rams was followed by 13 straight losses. Last week’s second win of the year (also over the Rams) apparently came too late to matter.

Back when Kelly was repeatedly denying any interest to leave the 49ers for a college job, PFT pointed out that this topic obscures the more important question of whether the 49ers want him to return. Apparently, the 49ers don’t.

Niners expected to fire Trent Baalke, Chip Kelly

The 49ers will play the Seahawks on Sunday, and when they are done it will conclude another frustrating, disappointing season. In the first year under coach Chip Kelly, they went backward.

And now, San Francisco faces an offseason of change with the goal of returning the organization to the upper echelon spot it has held so often in the league's history.

Owner Jed York and the 49ers' key decision-makers are expected to replace both embattled GM Trent Baalke and Kelly, multiple sources say. A full house-cleaning is described as "likely" by several people with knowledge of the situation.

A final decision won't come until after the final gun sounds. But it would be a major surprise if either Kelly or Baalke keep their jobs.

The 49ers have not had to replace a coach and GM since 2005 when they hired Mike Nolan and Scot McCloughan.

With the move, the 49ers now go one-and-done with their coach two years in a row. It means they will owe more than $30 million in coaches salaries. But as one source explains, that's not as important as building a winning franchise again.

York told local reporters he'll address them when the season ends. By that time, he'll be ready to sit down and discuss a search for two new faces of his team.

Is it the right call? Yes. Kelly was a horrible fit from the beginning. Baalke is just horrible. Does it make the organization look silly for having back to back one-and-done HCs after driving Harbaugh away? Yes.

3 wins in the last 19 games.

THREE.

And they all had to be against us?
Man, 2017 can't get started fast enough for me.

Trent Baalke. Even his name irritates me, the kind of kid that needs his head stuffed in a trash can. But it's too bad man, I sort of enjoyed him thinking all those wins had nothing to do with Jim Harbaugh only to watch the horrible truth unfold one game at an agonizing time.

Then you have @-X- swoopin in with facts and records... Dammit.

Imagine if they go and get Fisher and Snead... :ROFLMAO:
Wouldn't be surprised if Fisher or Mike Shanahan are the guys there. The team has no talent. Can't imagine them attracting a good coach especially since this will be their 4th one in as many years.

Last team to fire two coaches after one year each was the Nines 30 years ago. They hired Bill Walsh next, we need Fisher to apply up in SF.

They hired Bill Walsh next, we need Fisher to apply up in SF.

Carroll Rosenbloom was going to hire Walsh in 78, but decided to go with George Allen because Allen's record against the Cowboys who kept beating the Rams in the playoffs. Also Walsh wanted to be GM too and the Rams had a great one in Don Kloserman. Overall CR should have followed his gut and hired Walsh as he fired Allen after two preseason games.

Rumor has it the 49ers are interested in Mike Shanahan as GM and Kyle as Head Coach, so here we go again...BTW the Head Coach of the San Francisco 49ers who preceded Bill Walsh? Was Ken Meyer, who was Offensive Coordinator under Chuck Knox with the Los Angeles Rams.

The 49ers have made it official: general manager Trent Baalke and coach Chip Kelly have been fired. Sweeping change has come to the Niners. They now set about trying to find the right coach and general manager to lead them into the future. It doesn't figure to be an easy task given the state of the roster and the instability of the franchise over the past few years. - per Nick Wagoner

The 49's ought to hire Barnum and Bailey as GM/HC.

How that three ring circus beat us twice this year, when Seattle could not, is a mystery.

Stan K has demonstrated the fact that he is a patient and hands off owner.

Football folks appreciate working for an owner with those attitudes.

Stan should be able to get the "pick of the litter" this time, too.

Don't be surprised if Fisher gets a look here. The 49ers can't attract a quality coach. They have no talent on the roster. I've heard Fisher is tight with York. I've also heard Shanahan is tight with York. Their best case scenario may be Mike as GM and Kyle as HC. That being said who will be their QB?

I would love to see Fisher in SF.

1. Would make that rivalry all the better.

2. Kinda makes our division just a 3 team division, too. :sneaky:

Fisher and Williams against the Rams 2x a year? That's a lot of room for cheap shots at our QB....
