Chiefs steal Nick Foles away from the Cowboys, sign him as backup QB
By Matt Bonesteel August 4 at 9:08 AM
NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo reported late Wednesday night that the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to contract terms with free agent quarterback Nick Foles, giving them an experienced backup to Alex Smith.
Foles reportedly had drawn the interest of the Dallas Cowboys, who are in need of a backup to Tony Romo after Kellen Moore went down with a broken right fibula during a training-camp practice on Tuesday. According to multiple reports, the Cowboys now are thinking about trading for a backup, with the Cleveland Browns’ Josh McCown at the top of their list. ESPN’s Ed Werder reported early Thursday, however, that the Browns are “reluctant” to let go of McCown considering their assumed starter is Robert Griffin III, who hasn’t played since 2014.
Chiefs Coach Andy Reid has long been a fan of Foles and was the coach in Philadelphia when the Eagles drafted him out of Arizona in 2012. After moving to Kansas City in 2013, Reid reportedly was interested in trading for Foles, but he remained in Philadelphia and helped lead the Eagles to the 2013 NFC East title, throwing 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions. Philadelphia then traded Foles to the Rams in March 2015 for Sam Bradford, and he eventually signed a two-year, $24.5 million extension. But Los Angeles drafted Jared Goff with the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft after Foles had a sub-par 2015 season, and Foles requested and was granted his release in July.
Kansas City was left without an experienced backup after Chase Daniel joined former Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson in Philadelphia, where Pederson is now the coach. Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray, the only other quarterbacks on the roster, have never thrown a pass in the regular season.
