The NFL and CFL announced an officiating partnership on Friday morning that will see NFL officials working during CFL games this summer.
A group of officials will work CFL preseason and regular season games in June and July before their NFL responsibilities begin with the league’s annual officiating clinic in July. They will serve as field and side judges in order to minimize the impact of rules differences. Some of those differences include a wider group of plays subject to replay review and the use of a video official who can correct mistakes made by the on-field crew.
NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino believes the experience will help the officials get better at their usual jobs.
“Any time our newer officials can get more reps on the field, during practices or games, that will make them better officials,” Blandino said. “The collaboration with the CFL will certainly benefit us as we prepare for the 2016 season and we look forward to welcoming our CFL officiating counterparts to our development program later this spring.”
Some CFL officials will join the NFL’s Officiating Development Program as part of the agreement between the two leagues.
