NFL.com has taken it upon themselves to rank all 32 head coaches in the league. 32 of the most prestigious jobs in the country belong to 32 men that will see more scrutiny in 17 weeks than the average person will see in a lifetime throughout his or her career. 32 of the most sought after jobs for anyone in the football world. How did the NFC West fair? Let’s take a look.
San Francisco 49ers : Jim Tomsula – Rank #32
Tomsula brings up the rear on the nfl.com countdown for a few reasons. One, he is a rookie head coach, and two he has inherited what many folks consider to be the worst situation in football. With star players leaving in free agency (running back Frank Gore, offensive lineman Mike Iupati), or retiring a little ahead of the curve (linebacker Patrick Willis), it will certainly be tough sledding for Tomsula in one of the toughest divisions in football. The Niners still have some talented players, but the microscope will more focused than ever. Don’t be surprised if this one blows up after just one year.
St. Louis Rams: Jeff Fisher – Rank #15
A little better than halfway up the pack for Fisher seems about right. Taking a look at his history with the Tennessee Titans might incline some people to place him higher in the countdown, but the recent shortcomings he has had in St. Louis can not be ignored. Failing to finish better than 7-8-1 in three years has placed a sense of urgency on the 2015 season. Roster turnover in high profile positions will only stir the pot further as Fisher looks to put the doubters in the rear view mirror with a playoff appearance in 2015 for the first time in his tenure as head coach of the Rams.
Arizona Cardinals: Bruce Arians – Rank #7
Two years in as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals and Arians has produced an overall record of 21-11. Not bad. Don’t forget the two Coach of the Year awards he has accumulated in the past three years. One as head coach in Arizona, the other as fill in for Chuck Pagano in Indianapolis. Injuries have plagued the Cardinals in the past couple of seasons. Pair that with an anemic running game and you have a combination that would sink most ships, but not Arizona. Arians still needs to take that next step and win in the postseason to move up the countdown, but it’s only a matter of time at this point.
Seattle Seahawks: Pete Carroll – Rank #2
Carroll is biting at the heels of the number one spot on this countdown, and for good reason. Two consecutive Super Bowl appearances, including winning the first in dominating fashion over the favored Denver Broncos have put Seattle back on top of the division and the conference. Setting all that aside, Carroll is a players coach. It seems his team truly enjoys playing for him. An atmosphere that breeds success. Carroll will continue his reign until he is dethroned, but beating out coaches like John Harbaugh in Baltimore, Mike McCarthy in Green Bay and Asshole Face in New Orleans shows just how quickly Carroll has climbed the toughest mountain in sports.
