McCloughan could bring Gore, Davis or Brooks to Washington
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 10, 2015
New Washington General Manager Scot McCloughan could be interested in acquiring some of his favorite 49ers.
McCloughan, who was formerly the General Manager in San Francisco, would probably like to bring in some players he’s familiar with. Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com lists Frank Gore, Vernon Davis and Ahmad Brooks as players McCloughan brought to the 49ers who could be available this offseason.
Gore is scheduled to become a free agent in March, and although he has said he would like to return to the 49ers, Washington could be an option for him. Gore will turn 32 this offseason, and his days of carrying the load in an NFL offense are numbered. But Gore could make sense as a backup to Alfred Morris in Washington. McCloughan has said many times that Gore is one of his favorite players.
Davis turns 31 this month and had a career-low 245 receiving yards in 2014. With his production declining and his salary for 2015 set to be $4.95 million, it’s easy to picture the 49ers cutting him. McCloughan, who spent the sixth overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft on Davis, might be interested in picking him up.
Linebacker Ahmad Brooks is likely to be released by the 49ers this offseason because of his $7.3 million salary, and he’d be an option for Washingtn as well. McCloughan brought Brooks to San Francisco in 2008.
San Francisco has had a lot more success than Washington in the last few years, and McCloughan’s job is to change that. Perhaps he’ll change it by bringing back some of the players who helped turn the 49ers into winners.
