not mentioned in that article is the fact that he has a chance to set the record for K's-BB ratio..right now he has the record at 11.6 : 1

If he pitches out of bullpen (which manager says he wont do) and he walks someone, he loses the record (would fall to 10.9 : 1)but gains 500k (assuming he gets a batter out)


and this is the same guy who went 4-13 last year with an 4.86 ERA, including 1-12 at home for the NYY LOL
 
Normally he wouldn't have come out for the ninth anyway. Only once this season did he come out for a new inning with that many pitches thrown - and he got hammered that inning without getting an out.

Now it's possible that the manager would have chosen to let him try, of course.
 
Apparently the Twins offered him a chance to pitch a game out of the bullpen, and he decided not to.

Because, it's only $500,000 and he couldn't be bothered on a day he would normally be scheduled to throw between starts anyway.

Yeah, he might be worried about injury, or worried that he would suddenly get wild and lose his record. Or maybe he just doesn't want to back into something that technically he didn't earn.
