Everyone knows Eric Dickerson holds the single-season rushing record with 2,105 yards in 1984. A good amount of people know Dickerson accomplished the feat in just his second NFL season, but few know that he also had a prolific rookie season. Find out how many yards he rushed for in his first season, and more in our mind-blowing stats for the St. Louis Rams.
Gurley the Future?
The Rams have selected five running backs over the last four draft classes, including Todd Gurley with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 draft. Gurley is the first running back to be selected in the first round by the Rams since Steven Jackson in 2004. Jackson merely had 1,000+ yards rushing in eight straight seasons from 2005 to 2012, the longest streak in a franchise that has boasted Hall of Fame greats such as Eric Dickerson and Marshall Faulk. In fact, only three players have had longer streaks in their career: Emmitt Smith rushed for 1,000 yards in 11 straight seasons, while Curtis Martin and Barry Sanders each did it for 10 straight seasons. The only other backs in NFL history to do so in eight straight seasons are Thurman Thomas and LaDainian Tomlinson.
Super Bowl Great
Former Rams quarterback and current NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner played in three Super Bowls in his career. Warner holds the record for most passing yards in a Super Bowl with 414 yards in the Rams' Super Bowl XXXIV win against the Tennessee Titans. Warner also has the second and third most passing yards in Super Bowl history in his other two appearances; 377 yards in Super Bowl XLIII for the Cardinals in defeat vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers and 365 yards in the Rams' Super Bowl XXXVI loss against the New England Patriots. His 1,156 passing yards in three Super Bowls is one more yard than Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez has thrown for in his six career playoff starts.
Most Prolific Dual-Threat
Marshall Faulk is the best dual-threat running back of all-time. Of the 29 running backs who have rushed for at least 10,000 yards, Faulk has more than 1,400 more receiving yards than any of them. Faulk's 6,875 receiving yards and 36 receiving TD are by far the most of any running back with 10,000 or more rushing yards. Marcus Allen's 5,411 receiving yards and Thurman Thomas' 23 receiving TD rank second among RBs who have rushed for at least 10,000 yards.
Off to a Fast Start
Everyone knows Eric Dickerson holds the single-season rushing record with 2,105 yards in 1984. A good amount of people know Dickerson accomplished the feat in just his second NFL season. However, not many people know Dickerson also rushed for 1,808 yards as a rookie, giving him a total of 3,913 yards in his first two NFL seasons. That is by far the most rushing yards for a player in his first two NFL seasons. Edgerrin James is second on the list with 3,262 yards, or 651 fewer yards than Dickerson.
Video Game Good
Willie "Flipper" Anderson holds the NFL record for receiving yards in a game with 336 against the New Orleans Saints in Week 12, 1989. Anderson had 15 receptions in the game from QB Jim Everett. That is still more than Calvin Johnson's amazing 14-reception, 329-yard performance against the Cowboys in Week 8 of 2013.
Playoff Drought
The Rams have not made the playoffs since 2004, a streak of 10 consecutive seasons. That is the longest streak in the NFC. Each of the other 15 NFC teams has made the playoffs within the past eight years. There have been seven different NFC teams to make the Super Bowl since the Rams last made the playoffs (49ers, Giants, Packers, Saints, Cardinals, Bears and Seahawks).
Greatest Tandem Ever?
Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt had five seasons as teammates where they each had over 1,000 yards receiving. That is the most for teammates in NFL history, with Keenan McCardell and Jimmy Smith of the Jaguars and Cris Carter and Jake Reed of the Vikings each boasting four such seasons.
Night-Time Robbery
Hall of Famer Dick "Night Train" Lane holds the record for most INT in a single-season with 14, set all the way back in 1952. That was Lane's rookie year, and he set the record in only 12 games. No player has had more than 10 INT in a season since Everson Walls had 11 for the 1981 Cowboys.
The Deacon
Recently-deceased Hall of Famer Deacon Jones had three seasons with at least 20 sacks before the stat became official, according to the Rams media guide. Since sacks became an official stat in 1982, there have only been a total of eleven 20+ sack seasons and only J.J. Watt (2012 and 2014) has multiple 20-sack seasons.
