ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– It`s an unlikely duo, a cystic fibrosis patient from North Carolina and a St. Louis Rams safety.
It`s almost time for 16-year-old Corey Gradin to move back home to North Carolina.
Until then, she`s building strength and stamina in physical therapy. Corey`s suffered from cystic fibrosis since birth.
It eventually uprooted her family. They moved to St. Louis for care at Children`s Hospital.
With her daughter`s life in the balance, Elise Goldwasser knew Corey needed some fun and friendship.
Goldwasser, an internship coordinator at Duke, called one of her favorite former students, Rams safety Matt Daniels.
Now, they spend time together at least once a week. Matt’s even hauled furniture and showed Corey`s family around St. Louis. But it goes much deeper.
Corey’s parents just sat in Matt’s designated seats for their first NFL game ever.
Because of her illness, Corey can only cheer for Matt on TV.
And number 37 with the dreads noticed something about Corey’s hair; it’s like a halo, supposedly from her medication, but maybe not.
When Corey gets back to Durham, Matt`s made sure that the Duke football team will look out for her the way he did.
