As Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota closes in on what could be a decision to enter the NFL draft a year early, he can check one more item off his college to-do list.
Mariota won the 2014 Heisman Trophy in a landslide.
With 788 first-place votes and 2,534 total points, Mariota easily surpassed Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon (37, 1,250) and Alabama receiver Amari Cooper (49, 1,023). Last year’s winner, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, finished sixth in the voting, with four first-place votes and only 51 total points.
Next up for Mariota and Winston will be a date in the national semifinals. With their respective draft stock the subject of debate, a strong performance in that game (and, for the winner, in the NCAA championship) could have an impact. Despite the annual obsession over measurables and workouts, performance on a big stage influences scouts and/or the folks who own NFL teams.
