I don't even watch the NBA any more but still ... Holy Crap!!!
AD is hurt and has his off games. Lakers have won 4/5 without him. Luka will take some of the wear off LeBron as he will take the ball up.

Mixed feelings because I rarely watch the NBA. However, I once was a great fan; and love the history of sports.

This trade has me wondering if there has EVER BEEN a one-for-one NBA-deal of two stars of this caliber?

This is basically a 1-for-1; and I think Davis and Doncic are clearly both top-10 NBA players right now (arguably, top-5). Personally, I can not recall a trade that is comparable.

I'm not into the NBA like I was before. Just not same with Kobe gone. But I still root for the Lakers. I check the standings a couple times a week to see where they are. Even watched a little of the first half last night.

This I did not see coming. AD is a dominant center. You need those guys if you have championship aspirations. But he misses so many games you can't count on him to be available when you need him.

As has been for the last 40 some odd years, the Lakers are playing Chess while the rest of the NBA is playing checkers

The NBA is rigged. It has to be for this trade to make sense. I don't even follow basketball above the college level, and I know that this is a shitty trade on the Mavericks' part. They could've dealt Doncic to any of the teams who need a superstar for futures and young players. They did the exact opposite.

They needed a big man who scored a lot and was superb on defense. Who else could they have gotten?

Sabonis, Embiid, Wemby… this trade proves everyone has their asking price and can be dealt.

I don't understand this trade. You don't trade a MVP-caliber player at 25 unless there are serious issues or he demanded it (and there's no other option). Neither applies here. Bad decision by Dallas.

Well, Dallas understandably isn't talking. The Lakers see the talent and the youth, and likely figure that LeBron should motivate him to keep him healthier.

Plus AD is exceptional defensively and darn good offensively, although also prone to injuries.

It is way more nuanced than that, AD is a 25, 12 guy that gives you 3 -5 assists. Offense aside he is one of the best defenders and maybe the best rim protector in the league. He is a top tier defender.
For Dallas it isn't a deal Luka for future assets play it is a lets go get the missing piece for right now and adding a difference maker on the defensive end along with the 25 - 12 -3. AD doesn't need the ball in his hands and is unselfish.
We will see how it plays out but it makes a lot more sense than you are implying.

If 1 pro sport is rigged it is likely they all are.

This deal smells fishy. Undoubtedly a top 5 player gets traded in the middle of the night. An asset like that gets shopped to the league for the highest bidder.

A trade in conference to a storied franchise? Nobody does this and lives with the Lakers potentially winning a couple of championship with Luka. That is GM suicide.

Dallas could of got Jaylen Brown from Boston, Embid from Philly, maybe Giannis from Milwaukee, Fox & some friends from Sacramento. Butler and Bam from Miami. All you could make a case are better fits than China doll AD.

Check out the TV ratings in LA....way down. I bet they go up now :)

No GM is this dumb...NBA bag job is this trade.

Congrats to the Lakers though (for real), great trade for them!

I doubt Boston flips Brown, Dallas doesn’t want Embiid he’s injured more than Davis, Milwaukee hangs up on Dallas, Kings would do it, and Dallas says no to Miami because they don’t want the Butler headache.

The only team I see there is Sacramento, and if I’m Dallas I’d like Sabonis and other pieces (mostly draft picks) instead of Fox. Fox and Luca would play well together as Fox isn’t as powerful a distributor.

Im not an NBA expert so will take your word on those cases. Those were high level thoughts. Although Dallas took on the headache that is Kyrie, so I dont see why Butler would be an issue. That being said, I think you can see my point.

I am also surprised he was not shopped.
Although that could have resulted in an uproar in Dallas that their GM and Ownership wanted to avoid.

Also think Anthony Davis is a better fit for the Mavs than either Jaylen Brown or Embid; and that Milwaukee would not have moved Giannis who is as beloved by Bucks' fans as Doncic is by Mavs' fans.

Dallas certainly could have received a ton of draft choices but the Mavericks want to win now, with Irving, Klay, PJ Washington and two Bigs that will allow Davis to play the 4 (his stated preference).

Personally, I think it's a Good trade for Dallas; and a Great trade for the Lakers.

Most everyone thinks its a bad trade for Dallas. Yeah, if AD keeps getting hurt and isn't available when they need him its a bad trade. But it won't be as bad as everyone thinks if he stays healthy for a playoff run. He adds more value with his defense and rebounding. And really is not that far behind Doncic in scoring.

Is it enough to put them over the top? I don't see it. AD's probably only got a few short years left. His injury problems will get worse as he gets older. In 2 or 3 years AD's on the way down and Doncic is still in his prime. This trade doesn't make the Lakers worse today and makes them better over the next few years. Lebron will gone and they can focus on another all star to pair with Doncic.
