My son got T-boned by a guy in a full-sized pickup who ran the red in a hurry to get to work yesterday morning. He hit my son's mustang so hard it flung it 100 ft into a bridge abutment. He sustained major foot and ankle injuries, a fractured disc and a spinal contusion. He just finished his 4 hour surgery tonight.
His firefighting career is over before it got going. The doctor said his foot could never be counted on to withstand the rigors of a firefighter. His spinal contusion will take a year to completely heal.
The other driver's insurance never contacted my son. I advised my son to hire his own attorney to handle all the ins and outs of something like this. His attorney did an initial consultation in his hospital room. Obviously, the settlement they will seek will be 6 figures and they will get it. There is the police report cited 8 different witnesses including 2 police officers who saw the whole incident.
My son said it is a blessing in disguise. He will get his car paid off, saving him $650/mo. He's going to pay off all his credit cards, and buy a cheap used car, he can fix up like he did when he was in high school. He's going to use the rest of the money to go back to school. He wants to study radiology with the idea of running a CT scanner.
He wants to change the worst day in his life into a positive life change. Curve balls don't have to be strikeouts. Sometimes they can be home runs.
Oh BTW the police report cited the performance of the side impact airbags as a live saving factor. I've never been a fan of Ford but god bless them and their airbag. My son is alive because of it.
It has changed me as well. Don't get complacent about life, by taking things for granted, and don't forget to live life not just exist.
