I think he fits McVay and his offense perfectly. And the most important is his fit with McVay. It appears he is a football nerd like McVay. So if McVay can't get a smart vet QB, the next best thing is to go get a football savy kid, a coaches kid, who eats this shit up. They should be a perfect match.I think the initial shock is over for most. Many of us thought they'd pick an immediate contributor for a team that is built to win now. But when you listen to the interviews since the pick, you understand what went into the thought process. Its not something they just decided on the spur of the moment.
Could Simpson have been available a little later in the round? Its possible. But you gotta have the right trade partner to pull it off. And its also possible a team like the Jets or Browns who need a quarterback might pick him ahead of the Rams. Or possible trade ups from team early in the 2nd round. There were rumors the Cardinals were showing interest in that.
Was it a reach to pick him at 13? A position they don't need to fill right now? Probably. But if he's the guy they were targeting all along, they did not want to risk losing that.
Then there's the rookie contract aspect. If he turns out to be that guy, paying him on the rookie deal allows them to retain some of their key players who are gonna be free agents after the season. Dotson, Parkinson, Puka, Avila, Turner and Young after this season. Verse, Fiske and Kinchens after the following season. They are all important pieces to maintaining a high quality roster.
They used one high pick, in a weak draft at the top, to get a kid who I feel will be a very good QB in this system.
You're the 2nd poster who has posted something along these lines the past couple days. One thing we do know is the pick is designed for down the road. Not this year. I just hope I live long enough to see the results in 4 or 5 years.
I thought about it. I turn 60 this year. I was thinking if this kid really works out, and has like a 15 yr career, I will be 75, God willing, when we need a new QB. So I will probably have a few more marbles rolling around my head by then. My posts will read like So Ram's posts at that point. You're the 2nd poster who has posted something along these lines the past couple days.
Did I miss some fine print in the ROD Forum Terms and Rules?!? Is this place Dangerous? I sure hope not!

We might look back 5 yrs from now thanking God they lost that Atlanta game abd took Simpson. Can you imagine if the Rams would have beaten Atlanta and the Rams ended up with the 9th or 10th pick?
I wonder how that would have played out.![]()
There's always gonna be some people who don't like the pick. And they will keep not liking it after its over and done. And they will let anyone who will listen they don't like the pick.
Did I like it at the time? No I didn't. Of course I'm guilty of being part of this instant gratification society. I wanted someone like Lemon or Cooper. Even an offensive lineman wouldn't satisfy me. He likely wouldn't start year one.
The thing is, how often does a rookie change the fortunes of a team? Would one of those guys be a difference maker this year? No one knows. One thing we do know is the pick is designed for down the road. Not this year. I just hope I live long enough to see the results in 4 or 5 years.
At that point you say....My posts will read like So Ram's posts at that point.
