L.A. Rams No 10. impact play: Darious Williams pick against New York Giants

The 27-year-old cornerback emerged as playmaker for L.A.

In this series, we countdown the top 10 impact plays for the Los Angeles Rams that helped shape the team’s 2020 season.

Situation: 2nd and 5 on L.A.’s 18-yard line

Score: Rams lead 17-9

Time: Fifty-six seconds left in regulation.

Williams’ take: With the Giants driving for a game-tying score, New York quarterback Daniel Jones moved out of the pocket to his right and threw a dart on the sideline to receiver Damion Ratley. However, cornerback Darious Williams made an impressive, diving interception to seal the win for the Rams.

Season impact: Williams emerged as a playmaker in the secondary for the Rams in 2020, and this play early on was signature moment for the 27-year-old cornerback who made clutch plays all season. The interception helped the Rams improve to 3-1 on the year and gain some attention as one of the top teams in the NFC. Williams finished with a team-high four interceptions and 14 pass breakups on the season. Williams should have made the Pro Bowl beside his teammate, All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey. He was a priority for the Rams to retain in free agency as a restricted free agent, with the team designating Williams with a first round tender worth $4.766 million.
Williams also made plays like this pass breakup on a deep ball from Russell Wilson to Tyler Lockett on what seemed like a regular basis.

Quote: “At the end of the day, I try to be basically like a red dot, someone that’s dangerous on the field. I want every quarterback, I want everybody that ever targets me to know that it’s a 50-50 chance to get the pick, so I just think really it’s just the positions I’m in and capitalizing on them.” – Rams cornerback Darious Williams.

He flat-out won us like 3 games with big plays. Should be better this season too with another year to settle in.

His coverage is sticky and he gets his head around and locates the ball consistently. He dropped a pick six in the second game vs Seattle that would have probably won that game as well. Rams would be foolish to let him walk if he plays near this level next year. Gurley, Cooks and Goff money will be off the books. No reason not to prioritize keeping Darious around for 3-5 years.

I was one of the few that before the season started that knew what he was and what he could do. But this year is a big prove it year for him to show that he really belongs in this league

One thing I notice about him and Jalen is that they always seem to turn and locate the ball. I notice a lot of other DBs don't do that, and while I realize it's probably not that easy, I still don't understand why they don't.

Careful. You don't want to separate a shoulder patting yourself on-the-back.

I also think that his ability to adjust and accelerate (closing speed) allows him to set up and bait QBs. He often looks like he has allowed quite a bit of separation from his receiver only to close that gap or jump the route when the QB feels like the pass is there. He seems to be a very smart player and is always assuming the ball is coming his way so he has a plan.

I hope we can keep him after this year but of course, time will tell if he builds off last season and is just a late bloomer.

IF the Rams can sign him right now to a team-friendly deal.. why not? If he has another good year, he might get 12-15 million per year on the open market, and I'm sure the Rams would let him walk and look forward to a comp pick. But if they could get him now for 6-8 million per year with, say, 18 mil guaranteed... should they do it? It's not like they have a ton of depth behind him.

Not that few. I recall many here thinking he would be very good based on his 2019 play.
