The Los Angeles Rams will move into their new Inglewood stadium in 2020, but this season, they’ll also be playing in a new stadium – sort of. After two years of renovations, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is looking like a more modern venue.
The remodeling was officially completed on Thursday and it looks great. The new press box and suites give it an updated look, while all the seats are also up to date. There’s no getting around the temporary bleachers behind the end zone, but that’s because of the size of the stadium.

Here’s a good view of the new-look Coliseum from Thursday.

The updates made to the Coliseum include Wi-Fi throughout the venue, improved concession stands and more aisles. The new seats also include cup-holders, while the Scholarship Tower will house suites, loge boxes, the new press box and a Sky Deck.
USC, which will open its 2019 football season against Fresno State on Aug. 31, shared a thread of pictures at the updated stadium. The photos include views of the concourse, upper-deck restaurant and suites.

Here’s a sweeping view inside the Coliseum, too, which shows one end zone still has bleachers for seats.

The Rams will play their first game of 2019 at the Coliseum on Aug. 24, a preseason game against the Broncos. Their first regular-season home game is on Sept. 15 against the Saints, a rematch of the NFC championship game.

LOS ANGELES — The $315-million renovation of United Airlines Field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum has been completed, maintaining the public stadium's historic elements as it approaches its second century while also transforming it into a world-class facility ready to host not only USC and Rams football but global events like the 2028 Olympics.
Among improvements that fans attending football games at the Coliseum in 2019 will enjoy:
  • New seats with cup holders are in place throughout the stadium, including a large portion on the north and south sides with increased legroom and additional aisles for easier ingress/egress.
  • There are handrails on all aisles and anti-slip coating on aisle stairs.
  • A new technology infrastructure has been built, highlighted by a complete stadium-wide Wi-Fi system.
  • The new seven-story Scholarship Club Tower on the stadium's south side, fronted by a ribbon videoboard, houses suites, loge boxes, club seats, a new concourse with wider lower vomitories and new concession stands, a new press box and the rooftop 1923 Club (with its 360-degree view of the Los Angeles basin).
  • The colorful mural of a golden sun and bright blue sky on the ceiling of the iconic east-end peristyle's main archway, painted in 1969 by late artist Heinz Rosien, was restored to its original luster.
  • Damaged tiles throughout the peristyle were repaired.
  • Nearly 100 new automated ticket scanners at all Coliseum entrances will facilitate more efficient entry for fans.
  • Existing concession stands throughout the Coliseum have been upgraded, as will some restrooms during the season.
  • Many new food choices will be available.
  • More than 600 television screens have been located throughout the Coliseum's public areas and they will show not only the stadium's current game but games throughout the nation.
  • Game broadcast audio will air in concession and restroom areas.
  • New graphics and branding have been installed throughout the Coliseum's exterior and interior.
Also, the home locker room was updated and modernized, including new lockers, flooring and graphics.
Earlier in the renovation, new videoboards and scoreboards and high-end LED lighting were installed and the sound system was modified.
The plaza at the peristyle is named the Julia and George Argyros Plaza, while the press box is the Otis Booth Press Box.
Seating capacity is now 77,500 (from 92,348).
"We are excited to unveil the renovated Coliseum to our fans," said USC athletic director Lynn Swann. "There will be something new and improved for every fan, enhancing everyone's experience of coming to the Coliseum and cheering their Trojan football team. We are delighted that the renovation was able to preserve the stadium's historic integrity while at the same time creating a state-of-the-art facility.
"This has been a massive undertaking that required the support and cooperation of so many people, including USC's Board and administration, the Coliseum Commission, and Exposition Park and local government officials. We are very appreciative of our fans and season ticket holders, as well as the Coliseum Founders and many Trojan Athletic Fund members who so generously backed this project so that no public money was used. We also are grateful to United Airlines for its support in naming the field while continuing to honor our veterans. And we especially want to acknowledge our talented design team and the superhuman around-the-clock efforts of the construction crew that delivered this project on budget and on time under a very tight construction schedule."
DLR Group designed the renovation, while the construction was a joint venture of Hathaway Dinwiddie and AECOM Hunt.
Many of the 2,600-plus union construction workers, including veterans, came from the local community, with more than two-thirds living in Los Angeles County. Small business owners, including those owned by women, veterans and minorities, earned contracts worth more than $40 million from the project.
More than 800,000 hours of labor went into the project. During the renovation, 46,000 cubic yards of dirt was exported, 470 truckloads of concrete was poured, 1,740 tons of rebar and 2,131 tons of structural steel was installed and 4,618 gallons of paint was applied.
The renovation was privately funded by USC and, under the guidance of the Los Angeles Conservancy, preserves the Coliseum's historic nature. The renovated Coliseum is the crown jewel of the renaissance of Exposition Park, along with the new Banc of California Stadium and the under-construction Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
Coliseum events provide part-time jobs for 1,700 people, many from the local community. Under the direction of USC Sustainability, the Coliseum is a nationally-recognized Zero Waste facility, diverting more than 90 percent of refuse from landfills to recycling and composting.
With the renovation now complete, USC has information available for fans regarding transit, parking, tailgating, stadium access and seating for the 2019 season. See details below.
USC has been a tenant in the Coliseum since the stadium opened in 1923 as a memorial to World War I veterans.
USC began managing the Coliseum in 2013 and two years later it announced plans to renovate and restore the stadium. New field and stadium lighting was installed for the 2016 season. New videoboards and scoreboards throughout the stadium were in place for the 2017 season, replacing the boards that sat atop the peristyle and thereby restoring the iconic peristyle to the stadium's original design. Work began on the Scholarship Club Tower after the 2017 football season and continued throughout the 2018 season. New seats with increased legroom were added on the south side of the stadium in 2018, along with handrails on south side aisles.
USC opens its 2019 season with a 7:30 p.m. PT non-conference game against Fresno State on Aug.31 in the Coliseum. For tickets, go to USCTrojans.com/tickets.
Prior to that USC-Fresno State game, there will be two public events in the Coliseum: the USC Football Fall Showcase on Aug. 17 (featuring a scrimmage, team autographs, 10-, 25- and 50-year anniversary team recognition, Scholarship Club Tower tours and appearances by the Trojan Marching Band, Song Girls and Traveler) and the Los Angeles Rams will host the Denver Broncos on Aug. 24 in a pre-season game.

Looks great. Looking forward to the new stadium, but am really going to enjoy one more year of grass stained uniforms. 'Specially with the whites.

For me my main concern with the relic Coliseum was how to grow & keep grass on that field with all those games taking place. You think that since its California they could figure how to grow super grass;)

I remember back in the early 70's, I was 8 years old trying to pee in that trough that stretched across the room. It was not only disgusting, but for a kid with so many flys open at almost face level and the tippy toe effort to reach above the lip of the trough, is a bad experience that I won't forget.

The bad part is that I heard that they had not changed the trough up till even recently. I caught that they upgraded "some" restrooms, wth? That's a comfort issue for me and a deal breaker if I had to stay in that stadium for 4 hours of beer drinking and watching the Rams...The Big screen at home is much better than that, even with new cup holders..

This trough is still in Dodger stadium, and is what my childhood memory remembers, so maybe I have accused the Colisum unjustly, but then again, both probably had the zero privacy, troughs in 1973. Here is the one at Dodger stadium (still?)

Sweet! The stadium almost looks appealing now! ;)

REAL seats will make a huge difference.

Wish they could’ve made these changes a couple years ago, TBH!

For me my main concern with the relic Coliseum was how to grow & keep grass on that field with all those games taking place. You think that since its California they could figure how to grow super grass;)
The only super grass in CA is meant to be smoked and would not make a good playing surface.

Am I the only one that will be really pleased when the Rams are playing in a venue that does not have red seats? Now, I love the Coliseum could not stand when the Rams played in Anaheim with the damn dirt infield (Oakland last one) but I cannot wait to sit my ass down in a blue seat in American Airlines Plaza at Inglewood Park.

I remember going there in the late 60's and seeing the Pizz trough for the first time too. o_O I think it was like galvanized metal or something. Stanky.
I had never seen a trough like that, ever. My dad must have been laughing his a$$ off when I went in there with him as a yute.

Went to the L.A. Forum to see Guns N Roses about 1992 and the Forum had the troughs too. Must have been standard for venues. I don't recall troughs at Staples Center. Can't be gone fast enough for me.

Pretty cool having a Dodger Stadium pizz trough stored to photos:)

Really glad to see the Arch’s are once again uncovered, looks like they may have in the process created additional obstructed view seating near the peristyle end, all things considered they did a good job

Pee troughs are bad enough, fo sho. But let's all be thankful we don't have to put up with Giants fans at the same time

Rams excited to see upgraded L.A. Coliseum with construction done

For the first time since the divisional round game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Los Angeles Rams will be back at home – officially, that is. They’ve played one home game this preseason, hosting the Cowboys in Hawaii last weekend.
On Saturday night against the Broncos, they’ll be back at the Coliseum where they’ll play seven regular-season home games this year (excluding the one in London). The Coliseum will look very different to the players and coaches, too.

After a lengthy renovation project, the stadium received countless upgrades, from the seats to Wi-Fi to a press box and suite area that’s impossible to miss. Jared Goff is excited to see the changes, admitting last season was tough with the construction going on.
“Excited to see it. Last year was tough with that construction,” Goff said this week. “It changed some of our parking situations and I know a lot of the fans were dealing with some different stuff parking-wise. Now that it’s done – I haven’t seen it yet, but I heard it’s beautiful and I’m really excited to see it and excited to see my suite I have this year.”
Sean McVay is also looking forward to being back in the team’s home stadium, especially after a travel schedule that included trips to Napa Valley, Oakland and Hawaii.
“It’ll be great. We’re looking forward to it,” McVay said. “Excited to see the upgrades that they’ve made. The last time we were there, it was a really positive night being able to play the Cowboys in the divisional round. We’re looking forward to getting back there at the Coliseum and hopefully having a lot of good memories that we can create this season and Denver starts that process for us.”

The Rams won’t be playing their starters on Saturday night, nor will the Broncos, but there are still plenty of exciting players to watch – from Darrell Henderson Jr. to Taylor Rapp to Ogbonnia Okoronkwo.
