Super unfortunate.

Something I'm interested in seeing is how serious McVay is about his statement on feeling bad about playing a starter in the preseason and losing him to injury. Does he become even more protective of the guys he sees as playing a big role this year?

Next game's active roster will be telling ... Will we see Hager? How about Rapp? Or Gaines? Joseph-Day?

We'll definitely see whether some of these guys are viewed as 'unriskable'.

I find myself wondering how many snaps we're talking anyway tbh, when we have Rapp on the roster. At his worst he's probably better than Barron was, and at his best he'd give us a nickle look that might be able to stay on the field for most offensive personnel groups.

So if it's only vs some heavy run offenses maybe Wade can work his magic I honestly don't know. One thing's for sure... We didn't know a damn thing about Patrick until they had him rush the passer. But maybe we get lucky and that stint at OLB allows the staff to actually notice him and give him a good look on the inside.

Patrick probably sucks in pass coverage, but so did Kiser so whatever.

Reeder does too, but I'm with you guys on being intrigued by him... His hustle is outstanding. He has some talent. I'd like to see him make the team but it's gonna be close for him.

One of the major things I think we can take into account about our defense is that WEddle is likely going to be the signal caller on the field.

He's going to be getting these guys in position to just play.

I think that bodes well for the likes of Littleton, Patrick, and even a Dakota Allen.

Kiser injury has me worried. Rookies at NT and ILB, teams are going to test the Rams up the middle early and often.
Me too.......maybe its time for plan B

Coach Henderson has been utilizing mainly 3 DL'ers@ NT ....2nd yr player SJD, 3rd yr player Tanzel Smart & rookie Gregg Gaines.

Sebastian Joseph-Day has done very little IMO. It seems to me there is a very good chance that this 2 yr project, when it comes to "game time" just can not deliver. I have been ready to pull the plug on Smart & move on. Gaines thus far is the best of the 3 @ NT with flashes that he can be a starting NFL caliber NT but maybe just not yet ready for full time snaps .......then 8th yr veteran Micheal Brockers will have to move into the middle full time instead of his past part-time work the last two seasons.

Coach Henderson might already be planning to give the other natural NT rookie UDFA #62 Bryant Jones 6-ft/310 lbs from Miss. Valley State a ton of snaps these next two games. Jones raised in Riverside, CA. who made the team on a tryout basis.

Another HD run stopper is DT #93 Marquise Copeland who has flashed some in some hits & tackles made in his few snaps. Copeland is best played in the 5 tech post. Coach Henderson has been using him behind Donald/ Smart /Roberts @ the 3 tech. If Brockers moved to the middle, Morgan Fox & Copeland might be a duo in place of Brockers.

DE- Fox/ Copeland
NT- Brockers/ Gaines/ {PS} B.Jones
DT- Donald/ JFM

Most likely this injury event just hastened the rise of strong safety Taylor Rapp as a starter.

I am thinking we will see a ton of 2-4-5 defense from Wade If we can stop the run short on the first. It would possibly look like the lineup below:

DT- Donald/ {R}Gaines
DT- Brockers/ Franklin/ Fox

ER- Matthews/ Ebukam/ {R}Patrick
ER- Fowler/ Ogoronwko

MLB- Littleton/ {R}Dakota Allen
WLB- {R}Rapp/ Howard

SS- JJ III/ Parker
FS- Weddle/ Christian
NK- NRC/ Williams
CB- Peters/ {R}Long
CB- Talib/ Peterson

Pratice Squad
NT Bryant Jones
DT-Marquise Copeland
MLB- Troy Reeder
FS-Nick Scott
CB Dont'e Deayon

The thing about having Rapp, Ebukam, Howard, or Allen inside is that none of them are stout enough to stack and shed. It’s the only quality that Hager brings albeit maybe at an average level for an NFL ILB. Kiser had some power but even he is more a diagnose and split defenders type that needs the DL cover. To me, this was the problem with Littleton and Barron last year.

Matthews is the only one left stout enough to do the dirty work on early downs but Phillips wants to limit his reps to keep him fresh for the postseason. I say we need a thumper in the middle for first downs, second and short, and goal line alignments.

Nick Scott is Bones’ new special teams toy. There is no way Bones is letting Scott go to the Practice Squad.

Ya hafta wonder if the people who write articles like these even follow the team much less watch the games. Kiser was getting outplayed by Hager and Patrick. Now add in Dakota Allen and his injury probably will have no impact. Why would they need to shop for a replacement when they already have 3? Patrick is an ILB more than OLB.

That position was never going to be a fulltime position. It's primarily an early down position that will get pulled on many passing downs to make room for the passing defense sub-package. Patrick is fine with that because he's more of a run stopper, who has some pass rush in him than an all-purpose athlete. Because of his lack of speed I see him as a liability on passing downs when Hager would probably play if the position isn't pulled. It was probably going to be played by committee even before Kiser's injury.

Hager wasn't outplaying Kiser....

Call me crazy...

but from what I've seen this preseason...and taking these guys upside into consideration..

Allen...Patrick and Howard make Kiser AND Hager more expendable.... if those 3 guys are the other ILBs with Littleton... we have an athletic group there..

That's unfortunate. I hope Kiser recovers quickly and completely.

Meanwhile, I'd put Allen as the MIKE starter and have Patrick and Howard as backups.
