Former Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks kicker Sebastian Janikowski is set to retire after an 18-year career.

Janikowski spent 17 seasons with Oakland before kicking last season with Seattle after signing a one-year deal. Janikowski's agent, Paul Healy, confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday that his client intends to retire. Janikowski, 41, told ESPN over the weekend he didn't believe his body could handle kicking in the NFL anymore.

The Raiders took Janikowski with the 17th overall pick in the 2000 draft out of Florida State. Nicknamed ''Seabass,'' Janikowski converted 80.4% of his field goal attempts during his career, including a career long of 63 yards during the 2011 season, the only time he was selected for the Pro Bowl. The kick at the time matched the NFL record for longest field goal made.

Janikowski was synonymous with the Raiders during his tenure in Oakland. He played in 268 regular-season games for the Raiders and made more than 30 field goals in three straight seasons from 2010-12, including a league-high 33 in 2010.

Janikowski missed the entire 2017 season due to a back injury and his final season in Seattle was the first time he kicked anywhere other than Oakland. Janikowski had some conversations with the Chargers about kicking last season in Los Angeles, but he decided Seattle was the better opportunity. Janikowski was 22 of 27 on field goals in his one season with Seattle, but hit three game winners.

Janikowski is 10th in career points scored with 1,913, ninth in career field goals made with 436 and 16th in career games with 284. He was a second-team AP All-Pro selection in 2011.

They'll probably bronze his foot rather than his head if he makes it to the HoF.

Davis got a lot of crap for taking a kicker in the first round but it turned out to be a positive for that franchise.

I doubt anybody would have taken him in the next couple of rounds - and while he had a very good career, he wasn't that good - just played for a long time at a nice but not really great level. One time Pro Bowler, a nice guy to have but nowhere near worth pick 17.

FWIW, Shaun Alexander was drafted 2 picks later. Over a dozen Pro Bowlers were drafted after him, in fact.

There are 3 kickers in the Hall, only one of which was a pure kicker - Blanda was a great QB too and Groza was a good to great OT as well as a kicker. Stenerud was a pure kicker, and made 6 Pro Bowls doing it. He was consistently considered one of the top 2 kickers in the game over and over. Not so much Janikowski. He was good, but kickers need to be much more dominating year after year in order to have a chance at being in the HOF. Janikowski kicked for 17 years (missed a season with an injury) but was considered the best kicker in his conference one season. Using pick 17 for a good kicker, but who was never really great, isn't enough - especially since they virtually certainly could have gotten him later. No other team was going to consider drafting him that early - it's a position that you can get a guy nearly as good (and cheaper) as a UDFA, or at worst a mid round pick.

Plenty of time now to stock up on rohypnol and find himself some ladies...

Didn't that Anderson guy recently make it?

.

One hell of a drunken kicker. He'll be a HOFer for sure.

I hate ALL kickers though. They are not even real people.

Lol, remember Peyton Manning's comment about his kicker once?

"Here we are, I'm out at my third Pro Bowl, I'm about to go in and throw a touchdown to Jerry Rice, we're honoring the Hall of Fame, and we're talking about our idiot kicker who got liquored up and ran his mouth off,"

Looks like he feels the same way you do. :ROFLMAO:

You're correct, my bad.

Of course, Janikowski wasn't anywhere near as good as Andersen. Janikowski was a Pro Bowler once. Andersen was 7 times. And a first team All Pro 5 times. And on the All Decade team for both the '80s and 90s. And scored 600 points more than Janikowski.

That is the current standard for the HOF. A guy who repeatedly was the best kicker in the game, year after year.

It’s why Hekker is going to make the HoF.

Best year in and out.

Ray Guy is the only punter in the HoF. Hekker could join him eventually, if he keeps it up. 4 time 1st team All Pro, and 2 time 2nd team - in 7 seasons. Punters need to be the best or in serious conversation for that for a whole bunch of years, since the difference between the best and a good but not great one isn't really that far.
