EARTH CITY, Mo. -- After a weekend in which key injuries around the league began to pile up, another round of questions about the NFL's preseason slate began.
The Green Bay Packers lost star receiver Jordy Nelson to a knee injury on a play that looked completely innocent. The Pittsburgh Steelers lost star center Maurkice Pouncey to a leg injury that will likely land him on short-term injured reserve.
The St. Louis Rams have been able to mostly avoid serious injuries save for the early camp foot ailment that ended cornerback E.J. Gaines' season before it got started.
Those injuries and more have left many wondering if there are too many preseason games or if there are ways to prevent so many of these injuries from happening.
Rams coach Jeff Fisher doesn't seem to have an issue with the current way the exhibition season plays out.
“It comes up every year," Fisher said. "I haven’t looked at the injury rate, but there’s always ... unfortunately there’s going to be injuries in the preseason. You hope you keep it to a minimum from your starters, from that standpoint."
While every coach has a different approach, Fisher has long been a proponent of protecting his players and offering up time off whenever the schedule allows. Just last week, he canceled the team's final scheduled California practice, citing what he called a "tired" team as the reason for the cancellation.
Moving forward, Fisher doesn't seem like he's in much of a hurry to change how the preseason is handled though as a member of the competition committee, it wouldn't be surprising if Fisher was part of a round of discussions on the topic this winter and spring.
"As far as reducing the number of games, that’s a league issue," Fisher said. "I don’t mind four because the way training camp is set up right now and the offseason program is set up, you just don’t have the reps for the players. The four games, especially the fourth game gives the younger players an opportunity to get some quality reps.”
