Is Zac Stacy's job really up for grabs?

Evidence suggests that the Rams competition for the top running back duties might be more than just lip service.

This week, Brian Schottenheimer echoed what we first reported last month at the NFLPA Rookie Premiere in Los Angeles: that Tre Mason and the other running backs will compete with Zac Stacy for the starting role ... or at least the lead back role.
Here's what Schottenheimer said (via transcript of his presser):
"Well right now, competition is for who's the starter. We're just going to let them all roll and see what happens. You saw some guys that worked with the young guys today. Zac's (Stacy) obviously a really, really good player, but we're going to create competition for all the guys. That's a long way off, but we know we have a good stable group of backs and they all have different skill sets, which we'll try to use throughout the course of the year.
"No, not at all. We're just trying to create competition. (QB) Sam Bradford is going to compete. That's what we're trying to do and whoever wins the job, wins the job. But I expect to see multiple guys carry the football."

Competition is a big buzz word this time of year. It usually carries as much meaning as all those other OTA reports about how great a player looks and how ready they are to ascend this season. It's just talk, as Nick Wagoner noted in an article about the Rams running back competition on Wednesday.

I'm the first person to ignore the spring talking points. However, it was enough to make me take a closer look at the stats.
Stacy emerged from last year's running back competition, one that we assumed Daryl Richardson had locked up heading into camp. Richardson did win the No. 1 running back role, before he flopped to start the season. Stacy had the job by Week 6, and he finished the season with 973 yards on 250 carries.
That adds up to just 3.89 yards per carry, not a terrible number, but still on the wrong side of that all-important 4.0 yards per carry. Over the last five weeks of the season, Stacy topped 4.0 yards per carry in just one game. Of the 29 missed tackles he caused, only seven of those came during his last seven games of the season.
What about the impact of the offensive line? According to Football Outsiders, the Rams had an adjusted line yards mark of 3.95 yards, the same as running back yards. On the surface, that shows what's essentially a push.

Finally, there's some historical precedent. LenDale White took over the starting running back job in Tennessee in 2007, one year after the Titans used a second-round pick to get him. He carried the ball 303 times for 1,110 yards, seven touchdowns and 3.7 yards per carry in 2007. The next year, the Titans drafted Chris Johnson in the first round. White's carries dropped to 200 in 2008, while Johnson carried the rock 251 times. White carried the ball 64 times for the Titans in 2009, and he was gone after that.

Fisher has a history of churning through running backs.
But there's potentially good news in the White/Johnson precedent for the Rams and Stacy owners in fantasy football: LenDale White scored 15 touchdowns in 2008, despite ceding the No. 1 role to Johnson. I know that Mason isn't the most comparable player to Chris Johnson, but there's enough there to think that this could be more of a 1a-1b situation than a traditional 1 & 2, 70/30 split.

Of course, the real takeaway here is that not all OTA talking points are created equal. Sure, Sam Bradford is technically competing for his starting job, but he's really not. Stacy, on the other hand, might have a legitimate competitor trying to claim his role as the primary back.

Tre Mason has the highest ceiling of any of our current RBs. If he reaches that quickly, it'll be tough to keep him out of the starting lineup.

But, there's going to be a lot of carries to go around.

I think we'll see a 50/50 split between Mason and Stacy in the second half of this season with Benny getting a small share of the workload.

If Stacy is healthy, Mason is going to have to be spectacular in training camp to win the slot. That being said - running backs routinely get banged up. Mason will get a lot of chances in the regular season to show what he can do, unless he gets in the dog house like Pead did. And while I like Stacy as a pounder, I think Mason has the better high end. I think by the end of the season Mason is getting more playing time than any other back.

Not that Mason's not good, but, I just have to wonder what % of what he achieved was do to Robinson's lead blocking? Carrying that thought one step further, Stacy and Cunningham will be running behind Robinson too!

Finally in years and years of watching filth we are finally creating competition and people start questioning if somebody's job is in jeopardy? Of course it is.... I could say all jobs are up for grabs outside of QB and starting DE, Kicker and Punter.

Stacy is the #1 back period. He earned every bit of it last year, and showed up to OTA's breaking records in the weight room for a RB by benching 500 pounds. He was a definitely good enough to be a feature back, and is someone the Rams can rely on as such. The only problem is that he's a physical runner. Not really a "problem" just that he's going to get dinged up from time to time and needs someone to help share the load, who can also run between the tackles. Tre and Benny will fill that role nicely. Don't get me wrong I love Tre, and I was very happy when we drafted him, but I'm nowhere near ready to say he's going to take ZS's job yet.

Exactly, running backs do get banged up and they really want everyone to be ready. So it's no surprise as much as this team leans on the rushing attack that they're trying to build strong competition for that position to the point that it really could be anyone.

This^^ - Fisher will start the vet who earned the job everytime. Tre will get his touches, but Zac is lining up behing Sam opening day.

I doubt Mason, Pead, or Cunningham will wrestle number 1 duties from Stacy but I don't think they're going to be let Stacy get all the carries if he's getting outperformed by any means. I hope Pead and Mason realize their potential and give the coaching staff really tough decisions at RB

I don't think Stacy's job is really "up for grabs", but like the OP said, last year at this time DR had the #1 distinction. Stacy is much more of a power runner than DR, so unless Zac somehow forgets how to move the pile, DR syndrome will not happen to him. If Mason suddenly becomes the next Emmett Smith, then Stacy will get pushed down the depth chart, but he will still be here and he will still get some touches. Like others have said before, it's a very physical job, guys do get banged up. It's nice to have enough depth to hopefully keep everybody fresh.

I'll start by saying Tre Mason is the real deal. Tough as nails, consistent, and has a knack for finding the endzone. He can receive out of backfield better than the rest of HBs we have. Also his 40 time was slower than what he runs in game, clear from tape that he has breakaway speed. He was a steal in the 3rd rd, and really makes up for the terrible pick of Pead a cpl yrs ago.

Stacy has the job though, unless injury or sophmore slump take him down the chart. We have two very solid backs, like the Panthers did a few yrs ago.
