Imagine if I gave you a scenario where I could have given you a guarantee to beat the 49ers at SoFi in the NFCCG, but that we'd lose in the Super Bowl

Or.

No guarantees with the Big Bad 49ers coming to town with all their fans, ready to celebrate in our place and to never live it down if the Niners won. This is before we have any of our current memories in that game and they had owned us during the season. This is before watching them all file out, listening to the song, "I Love LA." I felt WAY more stress watching that game than the Super Bowl, itself.

That moment was worth every previous loss to the 9ers!

There are no guarantees in football. I'd rather have the chance at a Super Bowl. And besides, if the Whiners make any more Super Bowls, they'll lose them all.

Work with me, Memento. The premise of the question was making a Niner loss for sure in one situation and totally ifffy in the other. It's make believe!

There were many Ram fans (the majority?) who were dreading the potential "stain" of losing the CCG to the niners in our house. I was dreading going to Green Bay in January. I felt that the better of the two ways to get to the SB was beat the niners IN OUR HOUSE and get Steve Young's monkey off our back in the process. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way and I debated that point all week. Many believed I was nuts. Forget the result for a second.....which scenario had the best percentage of success? IMO, the way it happened. How many teams beat an equally talented opponent 3 times in a season? You could probably count them on one hand. How many times have the Rams won in Green Bay in December or January in your lifetime? Use the other hand.

I was at the NFCCG. Those few minutes when the loser 9er fans were exiting Sofi, were precious moments. Felt sooooo good!

I didn't notice......or the cameras didn't focus on him......but was Deebo bawling when Philly did the same thing to them this year? Or is he getting accustomed to elimination?

Chance for a Super Bowl all the way. I was equally stressed by both games, but we were never down by more than one score to the Bengals, while we were briefly against the Niners....so that is a large reason for why I was equally stressed

Thrill of victory doesn't exist without agony of defeat.

Those Assholes beat us 17 times in a row once.
Would beating them in the NFCCG have been as sweet if we had all not experienced such pain?

Would the 4 TD Isaac Bruce Game in 99 have been as sweet?

Take it or leave it, sports is about lining up against your opponent and seeing if you have what it takes to come out as the victor. You can compete against Lesser talent. You can un-level the playing field to gain an advantage (talkin' about you - you fuckin' Cheatriots). Are those victories as sweet?

I'm in it for no guarantees.
Don't dish it out if you can't take it.

For me, a loss to this particular team in this particular game for the right to go to the Super Bowl....all in our home, would have been the worst loss to the 49ers in our history.. It was the first Super Bowl at SoFi. If the Niners had beaten us and then played a lesser team in the Bengals for Super Bowl 56 and won. well...it reminds me of a scene from Braveheart, watching a peasant girl on her wedding night experience Prima Nocta. Since we won the first ever Super Bowl at SoFi, that will be forever ours.

If you notice, I still voted for the chance to win a super bowl over a sure thing, but it wasn't an easy choice whatsoever.

The Rams and 9ers have squared off many times in my lifetime. But never for the right to go to Super Bowl. In that sense I agree. Could have been one of the most painful losses to bear of all time. In this sense, I apologize for coming across holier than thou. Good topic that triggered a truthful response from me is all I intended.

On that note, and maybe this is a good topic for new thread - - What was your most painful 9ers loss?

For me it is no contest. (official Game Summary Attached).
September 16th, 2007.
9ers at Rams in St. Louis

This was the first Rams Game I ever saw live. 2nd Game of the season. Still lots of promise to the season despite Orlando Pace getting knocked out for the season in Week 1 and placed on IR.

The dome was electric. I was so excited. It was a year before my oldest son was born. I had only been dating his mom at the time for a year. She knew I loved the Rams, and surprised me with Tickets to the game.

Everything was going great in that game until it wasn't.
We out gained them that day in total yards 392 to 186.

Then in 3rd Quarter up 13 to 7 everyone in my section cheered the T. Holt touchdown extending the lead to 20-7. Except, a lengthy review nullified the touchdown and gave the 9ers back the ball.

We were beating them in everyway that day except on the scoreboard - -yet at the very end, Wilkins trots out to attempt a 56 yard field goal to reclaim the stolen victory.

The kick was strait and true. Everyone in my section was cheering and hugging, because at our angle, the kick looked good. The elation turned to devastation in an instant. It had went under the bar by an inch. He needed 56 yards, he kicked it 55 and half.

I was inconsolable for a few hours after the game. I was a pathetic basket case. I'm surprised my wife stuck with me after that, honestly.

Here we were in St. Louis cruising Market St / Broadway street, and I'm sitting on the sidewalk fighting back real tears like a loved one just died. 9ers fans celebrating on the street, mocking me. Nearly fought a few.
First live game ever, and to lose that way? To dominate them in everyway, but to lose to ourselves, not them?

Worst 9ers loss for me ever because of the context and personal connection being my first ever live Rams' game.

Its just a game. But boy, it can be so much more at times to the fanatical. That's why I like RoD so much. Us birds of a feather need to flock together. We can hash our fanaticism out here, and justify it. And learn from it.

PS. I also saw the "Mountaineer" game at the Dome live. Greatest Rams victory of all time in my books. Rivaled our first Suber Bowl win and the 9ers championship comeback.

PPS: I'm still married to the same gal, 3 kids later. She was a keeper.

No worries.

I have to correct you on one game. We lost to the 49ers in the 1989 NFC Championship game. Maybe saying lost isn't descriptive enough because we were slaughtered by our most hated foe. It resulted in Jim Everett's Phantom Sack and Everett almost fighting Jim Rome on his show for calling him "Chrissy Everett." THIS was the worst lo loss for me to the Niners and the sting still hasn't left me after all of these years.

Fuck. I totally blocked that slaughter from my memory. Which can be easy do to when the game is a no contest.

In that sense, I'm glad we didn't destroy them in our championship game rematch. May their wound never heal!

Yeah. Felt like they had given up in the second-half, the ass-beating was that thorough. The score should have been worse...
