We rescued a Havanese dog that was one of our puppies that we gave away 7 years ago to an elderly couple. We received a call from the wife asking us to take "Cuddles" back or her husband was taking him the next day to be put to sleep. We couldn't allow that so we took him back. Cuddles loved the man and apparently hated the woman. He barked at her constantly and nipped her at times and it seems that he regards me and my wife the same way. the little guy loves me and barks at my wife most of the day unless I yell at him or pick him up to be held.

My wife has been very patient with him even though he has bitten her several times. He wags his tail when he barks at her and, believe it or not, he stands near her wanting to be picked up and comforted by her when a thunderstorm is happening because he's scared of the thunder claps. Once the storm is over, he separates from her her and resumes the barking. I've tried yelling and squirting him with water with very little success. My wife feeds him and gives him treats and we figure that some of the barking is telling her that he's hungry. He's a little dog weighing about 6 pounds. I love him, but I expected him to love us both and I'm sad my wife doesn't get to enjoy him like I do. We were breeders of Havanese for 17 years, but we've never experienced a dog like this.

Any humane ideas that may help to at least stop him from barking at her?

I will and thanks. I need to look up the Pet Corrector product!
One dog we had used to bark constantly at anyone who walked by the house....it took about a month of using Pet Corrector and positive reinforcement treats and it was over

When we had Guapo he did get over protective with me. He snapped at my wife plenty of times. It just took patience until he finally warmed up to her. If he's a lap dog perhaps you could leave him alone with her while you're out. He might eventually warm up to her if she lets him sit in her lap.

@Loyal

We just started using this for our rescue. We haven't used the second or third stages yet, and he stops barking whenever he just sees the thing in our hands.

It worked wonderfully. I think my wife thought we were wasting money and didn't have any faith in the product. Today we have had the most peace in our house since we got Cuddles. She only used once and threatened to use it several times. It works like a charm and we can't thank you enough.
