I have to get this off my chest. I take these losses hard as a loooooong time Ram fan who doesn’t miss a single game almost a single snap, i know I should not let it bother me due to the fact that it is just entertainment for all of us but Gosh Damnit ive got to detach. Anyways I LOVE AND VERY MUCH APPRECIATE the coach he is and what he has done for this organization and i for one want him to be the man as long as he wants to be here. Please for the love of god i hope coach sits down with someone he trusts and they let him know his redzone play calling is his own worst enemy. He simply is too stubborn when he gets into the redzone. He comes out in that damn shotgun and its become way too predictable.. please learn how to power run that ball coach. Again flame away at me i dont care.. i just had to get it off my chest. Great season nonetheless and i hope you guys stay safe and healthy.

RedZone play calling has actually been very good this season or maybe it's just that the run game has been good in the RedZone this season. The Lions shut that down and we went away from it early, causing us to go one dimensional and everything went to shit from there.

I still would have had Stafford under center on the first drive at 1st down at the 4 yard line and if it had to be a pass - do a play action at the least. Getting in shot gun made it almost certain to the other team that we were going to pass.

Some of us didn't like the constant fades. Especially when rushed and making off balance throws. What happened to stand in the pocket fire one in there at the GL? Fades are like a prayer and they weren't accurate.

Don't know where everybody thinks McVay is horrible in the Red Zone. Here is red zone efficiency this last year. (2023)
and ranked 8th in Red Zone Td's and points.
Can that improve? Yes! but he's not that bad as many on this site make him out to be and act like they are some type of top tier prodigy play caller.

I don't remember the exact formation or personnel that we had on those plays but we have run pretty well out of shotgun with Kyren this year

I think he should have added some new redzone plays that teams haven’t seen just for the playoffs.

I agree, fades are a very low percentage redzone play. This is just speculation but on at least one of those it looked like it was an option play for Kupp and he chose to run the fade into outside leverage for some reason. Stafford didn't throw the ball until after he broke, he throws the ball really early on those designed fade routes

I think our game plan was to bank on Kupp getting open 1-on-1 and the Lions did not let that happen. The Stafford-Kupp connection hasn't been it this year. I think two of those fades could have been more back shoulder, in case Kupp didn't get a free release to race to the back corner.

IMO McVay's new scheme isn't complete yet. It's something I think he began to work on during the season. You can see the change once he released Henderson and began to use Williams as his #1RB. I think we will see an improved version next season. It's more ball control with duo run blocking, and intermediate passing banking on YAC for the bulk of their deep strikes. It allows Stafford to get rid of the ball faster.
Sean seems to have de-emphasized the gunslinger deep strike mentality. It makes the offense a better fit for more QBs, and is a reflection of what I've been saying that the Rams are preparing for life without Stafford. When you look at this offense since the bye and compare it to what he ran previously, the change is significant. So much so that had he done this before trading for Stafford, Goff would have been very comfortable in this iteration of McVay's offense. Nacua and Robinson look to be the new standard McVay wants in his WRs. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the Rams traded Atwell this year and looked to add another Nacua type of WR to replace him in the draft. Bigger, reasonably fast, but precise route runners with good hands.
It wouldn't surprise me if they extended Robinson for 3 years as a bridge WR while they develop the new guys they will draft this year and next year. It's the same thing with how McVay will be looking at his RBs differently. Field vision, agility and power being more important than top end speed.
We could also be seeing a changing of the guard at starting TE. Higbee just signed an extension this year. But with his injury and the emergence of Davis Allen do they keep him on the roster? His deadcap is certainly manageable if they decide to release him, especially as a post June 1 release.
This change in his offense is still in development. IMO it's a more sustainable type of scheme. Personally I would like to see them take a similar approach on defense. They are playing a front 7 scheme for which they don't have the types of players to play properly. First and foremost they don't have a 0T NT like a Vita Vea or Suh. Both Turner and Brown play best when single gapping.
Yep this is shaping up to be a very interesting offseason. The Rams are in the midst of an offensive transition, and it will be interesting if they do likewise defensively. They should because what they are doing hasn't worked in 2 years.

I have been saying that all year. Fades in the end zone when you need them, critical plays are the WORST. Its like, I knew it the Rams first possession and said to my wife who is a big Rams fan now, learned a lot about football, " I hope those 4 points do not cost us the game".
They did. See, if I know it, how come the uber smart Rams head coach does not know shotgun and fades are too tough to complete.
Ego I say. They look pretty in practice and he wants to convert that to games.
IF you pass down there you do direct line of sight passes under center. The defense HAS to defend that back line and uses that back line to their advantage. So, timing plays where the receiver just turns around near the goal line and the ball is right in his face with the defender, defending the back of the end zone are higher percentage.
We are humans. Take as much human error out of critical plays.
Simple is almost always better in life.

3 Detroit red zone possessions ended up in 3 Detroit touchdowns. 3 Rams red zone possessions ended up in 3 Rams field goals.
And THAT (besides the refs fucking us) was the difference in the game.
I love McVay, no other coach I would rather have. That said, he needs to pull his head out of his ass, let his ego go by by and simplify things in the red zone.

Rams don't 2-Gap. It's a gap-½ scheme.
Suh played NT for Phillips but didn't 2-gap. Wade's 3-4 was not a two-gap scheme.
Maybe you can explain this to me. You say Rams 2-gap Brown and Turner because the sometimes play 0-tech. But then you say those two play "best when single gapping".
I mean you are saying they don't do that now, but you want them to ... so how do you know they are best playing single-gap?
How can they be good at something they don't play? Are you referring to their college days? Or something else? Is it because they sometimes single gap now?
Can tell me what you are referring to or what you base it on so I can take a look?

It was not even so much the fact that we passed (although I would have liked to see some more runs!). Stafford was on a heater. And Detroit's secondary is their weak spot. It is the fades that bothered me.
It's not like we have big targets with long wing spans, that have a big advantage when going up to high-point a ball, like a Mike Evans, or even a supremely talented high-jumper, like a Deion Sanders, who could be counted on to jump his way to making up seemingly 2 feet in height differential. Our WRs are all medium-to-small in stature, with arm length proportional to their frames, and not exactly high jumping specialists.
Even Stafford isn't really a "touch" QB. He can put just the right touch on the ball, for sure But his arm strength is his best attribute. I'd rather ask him to just rifle it quickly into a window before it closes, rather than place perfect touch on the football.
