Cooks is more than a deep threat. With his actual ability to run routes and his speed, he can dash across the middle of the field and get open, especially if they are gambling on coverage to handle Gurley. He doesn't have Watkins' size, but everything else he does better. McVay has wanted him since he took over - I am sure he has a number of plays for him.
Exactly. Not only that but Cooks has the ability to set up his man with HOW he runs routes. He is a deep threat so the defense has to respect that. But he can run every route and his footwork and body control is tremendous. Keep in mind that we SETTLED for Watkins but really wanted Cooks because he can do what McVay really wants in a receiver.

The way you beat any team. Make them one dimensional. Either take away the pass or the run. Take away the Run and make Goff beat you by the air. Or, take away the pass, and make Gurley beat you. No RB can win a game on is own.
The question then becomes - can the team do that? Most teams come in with that mindset. Any time you can make a team one dimensional, you have the upper hand. The problem is that most teams are not capable of doing so against the Rams with McVay running the show. And if this defense is as good as it should be - sight unseen - that will be even more difficult for offenses to not be one dimensional themselves.

If no RB can win on his own, then the key is to always sell out to stop the pass and let the RB fail on his own.

Taking away one aspect only works if the other aspect is weak or easily handled. Neither our pass nor our run are particularly weak. Gurley isn't easily handled. It's not that simple.

And what do you suppose that one dimension will be?

Special teams?

When Goff comes to the line have the entire defense yell really loud so he can't hear McVay over the headset..jk

Of Adrian Peterson's 133 games I would say that one maybe two games were won because of him alone. If you take away the pass, RB's won't win a game by themselves.

Rough up the receivers and hope the refs dont call it, hold Gurley out of the backfield, but most importantly, tape their walkthrough.

"I resemble that remark."

"Anybody can write up a big game plan to stop the Rams, it's HOLDING the Rams under 30 that counts."

If it's that easy, why doesn't every team sell out to stop the pass? Why even worry about run defense? Exclusively get a pass rushing d line, run stopping be dammed. Exclusively get LBs that can drop into coverage effectively, no need to worry about running backs. Exclusively use 2 free safety type players, because you don't need an strong safety for run support. If what you're saying is true, why isn't that happening?

Hire Fisher and ask him to come up with a plan to neutralize an offense on a team you have no business beating.

Run Cover-2 Man-Under with minimal blitzing. Press at the LOS. Hope my pass rush can get home. Hope I can stop the run well enough with only seven in the box. Make the Rams nickel and dime their way to points to try and slow them down.

Mcvay licking his chops with designs built around stacked bunches and rub routes.

EDIT: not to mention that we can probably line up with a pretty standard formation and win straight up in a lot of ways.

If they bunch up, the DBs can just pattern match. At the end of the day, there's not much anyone can do to stop the Rams offense if it's clicking. Best you can hope to do is slow it down.

Because most teams don't have the personnel to do it. You have to be able to rush and put pressure on the QB with 4 and be able to cover the WR's. A lot of teams can do one, but not the other.

They don't have the personnel to do it because they're still worried about stopping the run. There's plenty of guys who can't hold up against the run out there but are good enough in pass coverage. The reason those guys don't play on Sunday is because they can't stop the run. Because that's still a thing.
