How Van Jefferson passed the first test for the Rams

When the Rams traded Brandin Cooks to Houston in early-April, they weren't necessarily seeking his replacement through the 2020 NFL Draft. They did, however, see a striking resemblance to two other targets in head coach Sean McVay's 11-personnel package.

"As you consider Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp, and if they were standing side-by-side, and they were looking into a mirror," explained James Gladstone, the Rams director of scouting strategy. "Their reflection would be that of Van Jefferson."

Among the commonalities was vicious route running that could leave even the best defensive backs "grasping for cloth."

"Though Van Jefferson was not the first wide receiver that we discussed for this group of draft prospects, it quickly became apparent that he would be the first wide receiver that we would consider drafting," Gladstone said.

From one of the most heralded pass-catching classes in NFL Draft history, it was a bold move to select one who didn't run a 40-yard dash at 57th overall.

And the Rams may not have, without the Cooper Kupp Test.

"Kupp didn't run an admirable 40-yard dash," said general manager Les Snead of the 4.62 on display in Indianapolis.

"2017, (Kupp) stacked as the fastest max speed at the Senior Bowl regardless of position," Snead continued, referencing the Zebra Technologies available at the influential pre-Draft event. "Van Jefferson went ahead and did the exact same thing. So that was something that was a great tell for us."

The executive director of the Senior Bowl, Jim Nagy, compared Jefferson to another undervalued receiver from the 2019 class, Terry McLaurin. The former Ohio State Buckeye went to Washington at 76th overall and proceeded to earn All-Rookie honors with 58 receptions, 919 receiving yards and seven touchdowns despite inconsistent quarterback play.

It's worth noting that while Jefferson passed the Cooper Kupp Test by way of top-end speed, there's no comparison between the SEC product and the FCS receiving king.

However, in 2016 at Ole Miss, before he transferred to Florida, Jefferson was in a skill group with a staggering number of professional prospects. Among them were his freshmen classmates A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf. Each hauled in at least 900 yards and seven touchdowns as NFL rookies with the Titans and Seahawks, respectively.

Player (Year)2016 Ole Miss stats (receptions/receiving yards/receiving touchdowns)NFL rookie stats
Evan Engram (Senior)65 / 926 / 864 / 722 / 6 (2017 NYG)
Van Jefferson (Freshman)49 / 543 / 3? (2020 LA)
A.J. Brown (Freshman)29 / 412 / 252 / 1,051 / 8 (2019 TEN)
D.K. Metcalf2 / 12 / 258 / 900 / 7 (2019 SEA)

"Van Jefferson out-produced both of those players while serving on the same roster in 2016 at Ole Miss," notes Gladstone.

As for the foot injury that prevented Jefferson from participating at the Underwear Olympics (as Snead often refers to the Combine)? The 12th receiver taken in this year's Draft said then he was already well on the road to recovery from surgery. Sean McVay recently wrapped up the virtual off-season expecting every member of the roster to be available for training camp.

Well I admit that I feel right now like my expectations for Van might be too high. And by that I mean I expect him to beat out JRey and start for us this season as the WR3 which means 11 sets he'll get a ton of snaps and in 12 he'll be rotated in. But I do think in terms of general fit he warrants that type of expectation just gonna be a matter of how quick he can master the offense.

So he might not surpass JRey until sometime in the season. The concern of course is the impact on him and all the rookies due to this covid shit. I don't expect rookies to be as impactful this year as most others, seems like there will probably be a slight decline because of them having a harder time learning offenses.

But it's all good. He's definitely one of my unicorns for this camp and preseason so praying his background as a coach's son benefits him here where he's been exposed to things more than the others and is more ready to translate to this level. I mean for example while he can't study at Rams' Park and all he can study WCO verbology with his Pops and the Ram-specific formation twists. And thus be ready to take JRey's lunch money and launch a ROY start to his career in 2020.

Oh and btw how fuckin cool would it be to have Akers & Jefferson as 1 and 2 in some combination for ROY this season? It's possible too if they can both lock up primary roles. (y)

Im sure he will see playing time at some point this year but unlike most here I think Kupp Woods and JRey are the guys this year. Injuries are likely so I'm sure we will see him at that point but I also see him getting chances here and there to show something. I just have a feeling Mcvay will roll with the most experienced guys majority of the time. That said im pretty excited to see what he can do for the Rams.

It is like getting two bonafide first rounders in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft!

He will likely never see double coverage or even the 2nd best corner so im looking forward to him taking advantage of that.

I see Jefferson taking JReys reps early on. I think considering who is dad is and the fact he has played in two college systems should allow him to learn the playbook quickly. He is a polished route runner that has the deceptions to get open early and often. They could split time early on. He will be a mismatch for single coverage by the 3rd CB.

I saw a stat recently on Twitter regarding Reynolds and Goff, and how their efficiency was among the lowest in the league per target. Cant remember if it was completions or yards per attempt, but it showed that Reynolds hasnt been that reliable for Goff. He has talent, but when Woods, Kupp, Cooks have gone down at different points the past 2 years has he ever really dominated a game? Or a matchup even? I think the Jefferson pick signals we let him go next year. Route running is much more important in the NFL, and JRey has always been more of a deep ball jump type WR. Even though he hasn't done that well for us. I think Van projects as a much better pro WR and also see him playing in majority of 3-WR sets before the season ends.

Rams biggest 2020 surprise will be WR Van Jefferson’s speed

The LA Rams are not just throwing darts blindly at a dartboard when they make their selections in the NFL Draft. In fact, the team does a great deal of debate, research, and analysis to support every decision made throughout the NFL Draft. So it should not come to anyone’s surprise that the Rams loved Florida wide receiver Van Jefferson’s route running, which compelled them to select him at 57 in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Imagine the Rams surprise when the finally get Jefferson on the field to discover he’s awfully fast, as well. And that’s on TOP of being the proclaimed runner-up route runner of the 2020 NFL Draft, second only to Jerry Jeudy.

True test training and timing

Of course, these are all just pieces to the puzzle. The true hurdle for the team will be finding opportunities to synch up Jefferson with his quarterback Jared Goff. Until the team finds ways to put Goff and Jefferson on the field to train together, it’s all guesswork as to how well Goff and Jefferson will play together.

In the meantime, all that is available is hope and patience. The Rams are just as convinced today as the draft day that Van Jefferson was the right choice. Even while the Rams have a full stable of receivers, the Rams like to use a telescope in the draft. Both Cooper Kupp and Josh Reynolds are slated to test the waters of free agency in 2021. Even if the LA Rams can afford to re-sign one, the likelihood that both will return in 2021 seems remote. In the meantime, the Rams can take the route running ability of Cooper Kupp combing with the point to point speed of Josh Reynolds at the same time.

I admit that I wanted Mims, but I've warmed up to Jefferson. Here's hoping that he dominates with us!

I love the pick but he's not going to play a Cooks (now JRey) role for us. I think he'll initially play slot when they want to give Kupp or Woods a breather. Remember, we're not re-signing both Kupp and Woods, so we'll need VanJefferson to learn those positions. And then if JRey wants more than we want to pay we'll draft that "X" (I think it's called "X"") role. For this offense to work, we need that straight line speed guy to stretch the defense - even if he's just there to keep the opposing secondary honest. JRey could have a good year for us because he can climb the stairs, whereas that wasn't part of Cooks game. I also think JRey is an easier throw for QB1 - more surface area.

If he really is faster then those guys who run in the high 4.3s, well getting a great route runner and clicking the stopwatch in the mid 4.3s would be crazy. Let hope for bat shit crazy.
