To obtain a 2nd round pick the Rams will have the obvious options of either trading back from #26 or bundling up some picks and moving up. They could also augment a pick swap by throwing in a player. Regardless of the method, it would be immensely helpful to have a 2nd round pick in this draft.
There are several TEs and WRs that could fit the Rams’ needs and surely one or more will be getting snagged in the 2nd, long before the Rams pick at the bottom of the 3rd. There’s also the issue of finding a Tackle and bigger, potential #1 CB.

To obtain what the Rams need is all the more difficult without a 2nd round pick. That’s why I’ll bet Snead makes it happen, or at least tries.

What’s your best trade scenario for landing a pick in the 2nd round? Which teams make the best target for a deal?

For example:
How would the Rams move UP a couple spots in the 1rst, only to make the pick more attractive to trade and recoup, not only some of the draft capital used to move up, but to gain a 2nd rounder in the process?

Go crazy. We have time.

A trade down is clearly the best way but it’s never certain that another team will have their board stacked where a player is ranked well above the next tier

We could be in business depending on where, for example, OTs get drafted. Then again many here would prefer we stand still and take a blue chip LT

Personally, I would pay Jackson and then take a RT later, leaving us room to trade down for more more picks. This is mainly because there is a large group of prospects with very little between them not allowing for scheme fits

I see this as similar to last year. We had a real need and the draft fell our way, so we didn't trade down.

This year we have even more positions of potential need - QB, T, CB and WR.

There is nothing we could do at QB and T to remove those as needs (in this case by need I mean, we aren't passing on the right player at those positions).

And while it's early, I am getting the sense that there will be options at both T and QB (depending on how the second best group of QBs fair during the draft process)

All to say, I don't think we will be selecting in the second round.

I could see that changing only if one of those need positions don't have the BPA

For a trade that won't happen - I'll say Stafford and our 3rd to the Titans for their 2nd and 4th

Why would we do that when the second round pick may or may not work out?

It only makes sense if McSnead have spotted a "can't miss" prospect they can get with the pick.

I'm not saying we should just answering the question asked in this thread. Those are the two ways I see we get one.

IMO.
We need to start planning for a future QB.
Trading down this year could give us the ability to trade up next year.

I certainly hope that trade wouldn't happen.

I really like the players who are slotted to go through round 3 range. So a trade down is fine by me, provided they don't pass up on an impact type player.

Exactly. I’m not saying it’s a guarentee, but we have to pay AJ.
Trading down is of the utmost importance.

I have seen some scouts who think there are only 8 to 10 first round grades FWIW. Basically a trade down wont be for considerably lower quality.

When it comes to the Tackles, this^^ would be my choice too.
It would be a bonus if the draftee had some experience on both sides and could possibly operate as the swing Tackle.

That’s kind of the mindset I’m in right now, but some great options might be around in the 2nd. Hence the thread.

More to your point about passing on impact players in the 1rst, I’m glad you brought that up. IIRC, you were high on Verse last year as the guy you wanted for this defense. Verse was easily my favorite of the the 3 Edge players who were most talked about, but I didn’t see the point in discussing it because I thought there was no way in hell he was gonna get to #19. I figured he was probably a top ten pick. I looked at a top CB instead.

Who knew?

If there is a “hot” position this year to go with the obligatory QB reaches by desperate teams, maybe, MAYBE a top player falls again (CB?). As much as I see the Rams going for a playmaker early, it’s possible a top defensive player falls again after the TEs and WRs go.

What would the Rams do then? Hmm.

You're probably mixing me up with Oldschool there. I liked Verse's toughness on tape but didn't think he would be what he is. Did not expect his power to translate like it did.

But precisely right about those impact players I think. Projection is an inexact science so I know the Rams value that extra pick. But if there is a guy you think can be elite then fuck it take him, because it is the elite players who win games in four minute when you're in Philly in the snow storm and have fought your way to that one moment that will define your entire season.
