Honestly, this Cowboy game was a real eye opener for me...

In terms of gems in Rams depth calculations, anyway.

Unlike the Raider game, this Cowboy game revealed maybe a dozen kids that look like they have a possible NFL future, some as potential starters.

It seems certain that the Rams will have excruciating cuts at the following positions:

OLB
ILB
CB
S

I’ll bet that Wade can’t stop smiling today. The only fly in his ointment seems to be JFM and Joseph-Day underwhelming. Gaines is looking quite promising and will probably look more so once playing next to AD.

The O has fewer new gems, but there will be excruciating cuts at WR. The 4th RB is still tbd. Edwards is the lone bright spot on OL depth chart so far, leaving me both mildly surprised and disappointed since I had expected more from Kromer’s boys. The TE backups have been underwhelming so far, to put it mildly.

My personal biggest surprises through two preseason games?

Pleasant surprise is a tie between OLB and ILB candidates among the youngsters. A solid handful of youngsters that are looking like gems, tbh.

Disappointing surprise is another tie between OL (except for Edwards, of course) and the TE kids. I really, really expected a lot more in both areas and I’m sure that the problem isn’t the coaching.

All in all, I’m feeling pretty darned good about Ram prospects for ‘19.

Tbh this game was an extension of last week for a lot of the young players who showed well. Patrick, half the secondary, Edwards, just a lot of young guys who are playing well individually. We saw a lot of the same names excel and they're going to win roster spots.

Obo was a big surprise. I've been feeling like he's the odd man out, but there is no way the Rams put that dude on the waiver wire. That was the guy whose tape had so many of us high on his draft selection in round 5.

Agreed though on the TEs. I do think Blanton has some good raw talent but just like in game one the TEs as a whole didn't do much and stalled drives with penalties. Basically Mundt makes TE3 by default which is disappointing.

ILB is going to be the position to watch in game 3. That and the bottom of the OL group to see who wants that paycheck.

  • And to all our resident draftniks banging the table for OBO...it’s looking like you got this one dead on right, you just don’t split a double team as he did last night drawing a penalty...without possessing mad skills
He just may ( if healthy) make #56 expendable

Tho I’d love to have them both, indeed I would

I can't help but think Snead may be working up a trade scenario in order for the Rams to hang on to one or two of these rookies to keep them away from the practice squad/waiver wire.
Josh Reynolds, Marquis Christian & Troy Hill come to mind as potential trade bait, although Hill comes with over $2mil in dead money because of that recent contract extension.

Let’s go ahead and wait until he plays, I don’t know, one regular season game first.

That will be a nice problem to have should it come down to that. Did Obo play both L & ROLB positions last night ?

I realized that the Cowboy announcer Bill Jones doesn’t know that much about football. For instance he said that Randall Cobb is a different kind of slot receiver, getting a lot of his yards after the catch.

I was very happy with the OBO selection. But I agree. I’d like to see him against a starting Oline first. I recall Justin Lawler looking good last preseason, among others.

If I were Snead I have my scout guys looking @ teams with excellent deep TE depth who are need of a starting young wide out (Reynolds) or a third outside CB (Troy Hill)!

By the end preseason their injuries might force them to add sprinkles on top of that deal.

I agree with the approach but would be looking DL, LB and maybe OL.

Honestly, I would not entertain giving up Reynolds. The odds of all the top 3 receivers playing a whole 16 games each are probably not good. There's a chance someone's gonna miss a couple games.

Reynolds did a fair to good job as the 3rd receiver and is probably as good as any 4th receiver in the league. I would keep him for the insurance.

The things that stood out about Obo should translate well. He was very sudden and quick off the ball. He showed the ability to really bend the edge - almost like a young Robert Quinn. He also showed off a few counter moves to the inside.

Reynolds is a good WR, that's why he has value, but he'll likely never be higher than a #4WR while with the Rams. We got him in the 4'th round, if a team offers a 3'rd rounder for him, he's history imo. The Rams have a couple quality rookies who are bound to be lost if placed on the practice squad, so if we can acquire a higher draft pick and keep a guy like Hodge & Webster around, I take that opportunity. We won't be able to pay Reynolds after 2020 anyway, but we can turn him into a value pick going forward. jmo.

I'm not worried about our TE situation at all. I assume we will have the same 3 as last year (Higbee, Everett and Mundt).
As far as OL goes...I think it's difficult for a bunch of young guys and 2nd stringers to be thrown out there, trying to play as a unit while also rotating to different positions. Actually, I'm surprised they did as well as they did - not including the dumb penalties.

Agreed. Kupp has nothing left to prove to me other than can he be counted on to be there 99% of the time including the post season from here on out. I'm not sold yet if he's going to be durable enough.

How would the 2nd half of 2018 played out with Cooks, Woods and....Mike Thomas?

I'm not jettisoning Reynolds for depth somewhere else on the roster. We drafted and developed him and he's now a playoff experienced, high end #4 and a serviceable #3.

Why would the team trade Reynolds? His salary is less than $900K and they have him signed for 2 more years? They worked hard to develop him...only to give him away? WR's get hurt, you need depth there. Reynolds provides that crucial depth.

We have an embarrassment of riches at CB and in the whole defensive backfield in general. Now suddenly too at LB with the emergence of Natrez Patrick, Dakota Allen, Tevan Howard, Troy Reeder (unfair ejection IMO), Landis Durham, Josh Carroway AND OBO....who knew you could find such LB talent in lower Rounds and on the Waiver Wire.
Who knew????
Wade Phillips Knew!!!!
